re: Fall Camp 2020 - Kentucky Week ** UPDATE **
Gus hasn’t produced anything but a few miraculous victories ... just enough to keep his job.... which imo doesn’t justify the expense or the needed trajectory of the program. We are sitting in neutral and have been passed by UGA, LSU, UF, and soon UT.... UA is in decline but still in better shape than we are.

Its one of Gus's biggest failures

Maybe I'm not taking the tone correctly but...

Didn't Pettway lead the conference in rushing in 2016?
Wasn't KJ the SEC POY in 2017?

I don't think rushing attack or players in the backfield have been a failure at all. Kerryon was top 50 player, wasn't he? Tank... Armoni... Roc Thomas

Yeah, Missouri’s 2013 team certainly had a nasty pass rush, but was also charmin soft against the run. I wonder which defense he would choose?
IIRC, they were #2 against the rush before playing Auburn. Then they trotted out that 3-3-5 defense and got gashed...

How was Kerryon a surprise? He was a 5* by some publications, a consensus top 50 player.

re: Fall Camp 2020 - Kentucky Week ** UPDATE **
He was a surprise that he lasted. That’s what I was getting at. He got injured most of his career at Auburn. His last year he did great until his late season injury. He was more of a 3 down back than I thought.

Someone brought up Pettway and I agree. He was the back we needed. Just needed him to stay the course.

And people need to stop bringing up Roc Thomas. That’s not even funny. He was obviously not the right kind of back.

Not to sound like Brannigan, but one play doesn’t change the fact that he’s gone down very easily on a lot of plays.

exactly. And showing how he stacks up against a safety(that photo) is not what we are talking about.

Running inside requires a back to break tackles from DTs and LBs too. We know Shivers has great straight away speed.

I agree, while I like Shivers heart and drive, he will go down easier, which is nothing like edwards-helaire.

That is an interesting take. Kerryon was a big time recruit and he panned out just fine.

Bubba Pettway worked out pretty well until other issues came into play.

As far as Roc Thomas goes...I know 95% of the fanbase that I personally communicate with thought he was going to be a frickin star. He did not become that at Auburn.

Asa Martin turned into a headcase.

I don't think Gus has really failed at RB recruiting/developing at all.

Trajectory? I'm amazed at the takes on this site and other sites. Historically Gus is overperforming. He's also a young coach on a learning curve. We recruit better than we have historically, have minimal coaching turnover, have a minimal amount of player problems, are fundraising at historical levels, etc. Bitch and moan about the X's and O's play-by-play all you want but Gus is doing a fine job running the AU football program.

alpinetiger Thank you for pointing that out. Some people don't get it. They are the reason I don't post much. 100% agree with you.

Maybe they were just soft against us. I don’t know.

The stats I’m looking at show they were 49th in nation in rushing defense. 7th in SEC as well.

I may be biased, but we would have rushed for 250+ against the '86 Bears defense.

What history are you looking at? Definitely not the past 40 years.

quote:

He’s 54 years old. He’s in his prime as far as coach age goes.

quote:

We recruit better than we have historically

Why is he not historically winning more games then? Why can he not win a bowl game against far inferior talent?

quote:

have minimal coaching turnover

Sometimes that isn’t a good thing.

Thank you. We have never recruited or performed like we have as of late. Dumb people are dumb.

You can’t convince some of these people that CGM is under performing.... getting your head beaten in by UGA and LSU yearly isn’t the norm...

We had 4 first round picks on a team that went undefeated. We have recruited much high that 3rd in the West talent we have under Gus.

But if you think Shivers is the man because he's the "starter" you're mistaken. Like I said think 10-12 "touches" per game. Last year in the off season everyone was begging for that. So make your damn minds up what you want.

I agree. We have seen this before with Malzahn. He names a starter for the first game, and even in the first game, you may that starter 'maybe' carry 3 times, and overtime is replaced by the actual RB they wanted to be the 'main' carrier.

Shivers will help us, and is our 'emotional' leader it seems. But I expect whether it's Tank or MAR or a combination of the 2 to be the 'go to' guys down the stretch.

If DJ is in that mix..like you said...it's just not being shown in the media news bites.

I like the way you think steeler, Tank and MAR will shine, and early.

Take a look at MAR's tapes, he glides through holes like Eric Dickerson (no Im not saying he is, just his style). He obviously has good hands and vision or he would not be taking snaps as punt returner. He is gonna be a good one.

I also love his story about deciding on Auburn when we were recruiting his brother, pretty neat.
