We had 20+ INT this year, Melvin Smith didn't do great but woring with Mincy and Jonathan Jones means he'd have to be Jesus to make that miracle happen
agreed. He did pretty well with what he had to work with at MSU also. Harbison is the bad apple I think.

He made 600k while at AU. Not to mention he coached the worst unit on our team. The shite talking he gets is deserved.
Smith's been coaching SEC CB's for almost 20 years and has a Thorpe award winner to his credit. Keep in mind he's only been here for two years with guys he didn't even recruit for the most part.
Honestly, the saddest part of the football arms race is the lack of patience. I have no doubt that Smith could do well if he had a few years like he did at MSST. You just don't always get that chance with a change of coordinator.

I don't know if Smith will ever be great considering he isn't an elite recruiter and he isn't the greatest CB coach. Don't kid yourself into thinking he isn't solid and can get the job done as a last resort

Muschamp should probably get the say on who his guys are if he is going to take all the heat/responsibity for the defense.
Smith will get picked up by someone.

having a good coach that can bring in elite talent is better than a great coach bringing in crap each year. The crap can be forged into great players but they are 3 year projects for the most part and the coach will be gone before that if he isn't producing.

Honestly with no dominant recruits and crap performance on the field all the D coaches were over paid.

I don't disagree with you at all. T-rob is a hell of a recruiter and if he does come to Auburn, don't expect us to be landing the elite guys even then. With Saban in Tuscaloosa, Fisher winning games in Tallahassee and UGA being above average we are fighting from our heels to get guys. The good news is that we have some young guys that can grow into good players and we don't need an elite defense to win a lot of games.

We don't need to get all the dominant recruits, just a few key ones to fill holes.

yes we do.

I absolutely agree with that. Landing a top notch JUCO corner this year would have done wonders for a defense next year and if there were ever any really good linebackers coming from JUCO that would be awesome too.

Every. Damn. Time.
I got nauseous watching our third down D a few times this year.

Which is not a situation we will ever have with Gus I would imagine. If there is anyone that knows how much is sucks to be an OC/DC and have your legs cut out from under you due to staff division it would be Gus after his experiences at Arky under Nutt (and to a lesser extent under Chizik at Auburn). Those are probably the major reasons for how adamant he is that the DC will handle his side of the ball.
