Watching the film yesterday Thorne had decent protection, he left alot or had weird pocket dodges and spin moves? (taking his eyes off receivers) and just didnt' throw to wide open or open receivers multiple times. Looking at it you wonder if he's trying to sabotage the offense. Jay Fair who was the star for Samford barely had passes his way. It's like he can't see people right in front of him that are open if he scrambles too.

I went to Auburn 91-95 and those first few years I can remember Stan White laying on his back alot and constantly looking over at the sideline with a confused shrug. Tater tot brought in the right system and he looked like a totally different QB in 93.

Jason Campbell same thing. I don't remember anything out of the ordinary 2001-2003 and there were times he looked lost. The Gorgeous One came around in 2004 and Campbell went next level.

I thought between Freeze and Montgomery we would have some similar transition. I thought they could probably make Ashford look good. But obviously this is not the case. RPO is nothing if you don't have a QB that can complete a 5 yard pass, much less a 40 yard pass.

I think the OL pass blocking is better this year. Go watch Bo Nix Oregon highlights and it is not like he has 5 seconds back there. But he is good at getting rid of it in 2-3 seconds or taking off.

Maybe midnight in Montgomery should call more than 4 pass plays a game for Ashford.

He’s calling plays to Robbie’s ability and capacity. Robby is not good at it. I respect the hell out of the young man. He’s a warrior and the way he has handled his situation is admirable, but right now he is not an SEC caliber QB outside of his running ability.

No, he’s not. Spreading the field out with quick WR screens, slants, crossing routes, and the occasional over the top deep ball is Robby’s best suited offense. We saw it in the first half against LSU last season. The bunch sets don’t work well with Ashford.

Pink had a nice description of the rpo and lack there of. Once they saw we could not complete a pass they simply creeped the safety and then the "0" was no longer there, no handoff, no QB run, and we could not pass it.
They didn't respect the intermediate to long passing game. Were jumping the run and jumping screens. You can see it in the 3Q where the safety bites hard on a play action by Robby. He has 1v1 on a safety and overthrows by about 15 yards.

Correct, if you watch those QB drills on pocket movement the whole point is you keep your shoulders square and take quick choppy steps so you can get rid of the ball. Once you rotate your shoulders or spin, now you have to reset and you're talking a full second to get rid of the ball.

Freeze said he threw it to the right spot, and Shorter cut off the route FWIW.

Fair enough - Shorter never stopped running and the ball was like 15 yards downfield from him so not sure how he could possibly get to it, but sounds like he was supposed to be going straight down the seam and not running a post.

I will say the other fade ball he had to the left side was very catchable and the WR just made a terrible adjustment to the ball in the air and ended up making kind of a floppy attempt at catching it. In aggregate Robby was equal or better in accuracy than Thorne was downfield which is scary.

You will be forever Ashford frustrated while he’s trying to be a QB. Carry on

Which with combined with Ashford not panicking, and his running ability, is why he needs to be the starter. Thorne has not shown the passing ability that supposedly won him the job.

No, because I don’t have expectations that he’s going to be Cam or something. I just recognize that just like last season, he’s the best QB we have on the roster.

Ok let me spell it out for you guys. QB meeting last night. Coaches tell the QBs it ain’t good enough. We are shaking things up. Holden will be taking reps with both the first and second teamers on the game plan.

This weeks QBs will be Thorne Robby Holden. But Holden should have some understanding of the game plan and reps which is not usual for the 3rd string QB in season.

If we get the same results as we have been. Holden will move to QB1 during the bye week and start the LSU game.

I’m not sure how much more plain I can make it.

Seems like you'd be better positioned to know

But it always makes me skeptical when the same inside little bird info comes from different posts on different sites and it's identical to the conventional wisdom and speculation that was floating around all of the boards yesterday afternoon.

Regardless, it was the most sensible plan both before and after the inside information variant of it landed on the scene.

If passing isn't going to work, how about a triple option variant.

Laying it out like this. I am finding myself agreeing with you, just a little. The very least it could be possible. I guess we will see. Thorne thus far looks really bad and the defenses he will be facing aren’t going to get easier. But make no mistake I don’t think Robby makes us much better, but he quicker and faster. I am hoping Geriner steps up some how.

Did you actually watch his output?

He looked like a weak armed High School dropout. Zero arm strength for out patterns.

There are three names I used in my post, which one are you referring to, Geriner?

If Geriner, I missed his moment in the game?

I was walking to the car with 5-6 Min left

I hear you. I just saw the red flag when Freeze said Thorne couldn’t handle the pressure of a QB competition, and I wondered how he was supposed to handle pressure in games then. And when he walked out against Cal, you could see how rattled he was before the first snap. Ashford may get overhyped sometimes, but I’d take that all day long over someone that is timid. It’s quite puzzling to see a guy that has started somewhere else for 2 years look like that. Maybe him losing his starting job in the spring at MSU really killed his confidence. That’s hard to get back once you get inside your own head.
