the next coach is going to need to be able to stockpile talent while recruiting against some of the best in the business

There is only one coach being mentioned that has the ability to do this.

depends on quality of opponents played. but certainly C followed by B.

For the record, Coach C was Frank Solich at Nebraska from his 2nd year until he was fired.

Coach B was Jim Donnan's entire tenure at UGA

Coach A was Nick Saban at Michigan State. He was hired at LSU after the 9-2 year.

But people are acting like he’s a first option. He should be pretty far down the list of people we contact.

Do you think Harsin was at the top of the list? Is our reputation better, or worse since then?

If our guys are willing to throw the check book at somebody, then go for it all. Give them a Jimbo-deal and complete control and make them say NO! But, if we aren't willing or able to do that, then we'd better have a list of more reasonable choices, or we will look like Tennessee a few years back with their embarrassing coach search. Drag it out too long, and even the lesser knowns will turn us down.

Talent and resources also play a huge factor. History has shown that shitty coaches do less with more, and really good coaches do more with less. That's the way a lot of people see Freeze in comparison to Gus. Was there ever a year when Gus and Freeze were at their former jobs, that Ole Miss was more talented from top to bottom? Did Ole Miss ever finish above Auburn in recruiting rankings during that same time?

Hmmm…now all of the sudden signing a few kids matters…

Deion is the surest bet on recruiting ability.

IMO Tier 2 Recruiting wise with more proven coaching chops:

Aranda (probably longshot) - If I were running the program I'd already have reached out
Kiffin (probably longshot)
Freeze (maybe? he had talent at OM when they were getting paid.. and he'd have NIL money now)
Urban (longshot, could blow up program)

It's a Mississippi newspaper that published that story, and we're still in the first month of the season.

Of course he's going to share that article to show that he's focused on the job at hand.

That's also why coaches have agents. So they can do the backdoor talking while the coach coaches.

All of a sudden? It's always mattered! The key is to combine talent with great coaching. You can have one, or the other, and the results will likely be the same. Recent example is Appy St vs. TAM.

Piece of advice for you: keep up with your own arguments that you’ve made in the past.

n 2013 and 2016, Ole Miss beat Auburn in the rankings. In 3 other years, the schools were within 3 places of each other.

Not trying to pick a fight but I remember AU being more talented and think the numbers show that. To look at the depth they really had you need to go back to 2010 or so to look at what he inherited + brought in. I think sometimes people forget how good our recruiting was during that era. From 2010-2016 Auburn was top 10 all years but 1. OM only broke the top 10 twice, and their average range was 15-25.

Under Freeze OM recruiting took a HUGE uptick (maybe because paying players), but they still never really recruited on the same level that Auburn did.

Recruiting comparison 247sports composite:
2010 - Auburn 6 OM 24
2011 - Auburn 5 OM 20
2012 - Auburn 11 OM 48
2013 - Auburn 8 OM 10
2014 - Auburn 6 OM 15
2015 - Auburn 8 OM 17
2016 - Auburn 9 OM 5

Which one of them brought up Harsin's name during the last HC search?

Technically Steven Godfrey did after the Steele thing failed and he said

"This is the part of the search where Auburn goes and hires someone out of the Blue"

Is your point that Jimbo Fisher would have been a bad hire to you coming out of FSU? He was about as close to a sure thing hire as you'll ever get in CFB... If you wouldn't have called him a good hire then what is?

In 8 seasons:
6 - 10 win seasons
4 Division titles
3 Conference titles
1 National title

As previously mentioned, Jimbo's downfall is that he won't let go of the offensive play calling. Same as Gus.

This is why so many people seem to be on board with hiring a Deion type recruiter as HC, who will then trust his coordinators to do the job. At this level, it seems to work best when you have a CEO-HC.

Jimbo and Gus are very similar. Married to an offensive system..: rely on defense to keep you in games.

TBH that retweet makes me think it's more likely

I think a lot of coaches wouldn't dare retweet a story connecting them to another job, especially at a bigger school where there isn't a vacancy yet

I think Kiff thought it was a perfect subtle brag to show he's in the public mix for the Auburn job and could do it under the cover of the article's theme (Ole Miss is good enough on its own) so that he didn't come off like an ahole
