Yup. And has been the consensus on this board basically since the contract extension. Came sooner than expected but still

John Cohen had already agreed to make Steven Pearl HCIW or the new HC, if Bruce Pearl wanted to retire before or after the season. BP told me that months ago.

This is from Hoke. But yes, message board gospel.

I'm not sure why he's even arguing about this.

No no no no no. Steven is a nepo baby who has done nothing with his life and is destined for failure because he came from Bruce’s nutsack.

Or Steven is a shite hire for a program fresh off a final four.

Unless its been specifically stated I still think its for the Senate run. I think people are mishearing him a bit in the video. He talks multiple times about not being the coach if he can't be 100% in, He says he can't run for Senate and be coach, but he will also stay on as an ambassador. He's going to do both, and I think people are thinking he said that he's choosing one over the other, but he can't technically run for Senate since its not time yet. Its why he says he will be at games "when I can".

Just still feels wrong to me. It shouldn't have been a random surprise on a Monday. There should have been a real chance to celebrate and honor what he's done. And selfishly as a fan I still feel like he had a natty run in him. I hate we won't get to see it.

Its basically a 1 year deal for Steven no matter what the contract says imo. He couldn't have been given an easier start. Not saying he's got to be great or won't make mistakes, but he should be able to field a competent decent squad no matter what. If he does good we will keep him, but if he's bad they will move on. I'd guess he will have a small buyout.

Has been proven you can win at Auburn, and we will pay. We should be fine

That's because its September 22nd. We have had rings ceremonies and all kinds of events since the Final Four when he could have gone out.

Would suck to be paying a buyout on a guy that had 0 head coaching experience when we hired him but the odds are that is how it ends. Can't believe they agreed to 5 years. This is about as bad a plan as the Malzahn extension at the SEC Championship game in 2017.

I am seeing other schools had their first day of basketball practice today. Did Bruce really retire on the first day of basketball practice?

This was 100% a strategic move to assure his son ended up with the job.

Depends on what the number is. If its small enough it won't matter. I doubt he will have a big buyout with no experience.
