Or not risk an injury in a bowl game that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things and risk potential future income you could make, either as a pro in the NFL, or as a track star.

Things have changed in the last 40 years. Football, and life in general, isn't the same as it was back when Pat Dye and Bear Bryant were on the sidelines. There's a reason no major programs run the wishbone or triple option anymore.
Players opt out all the time, and guess what, the University doesn't immediately kick them out because they decided not to play in a bowl game. It's just a part of the evolution of football now.
