Sounds like a good opportunity to prove yourself
They seem to be wanting an already proven guy. He may be an option to Gus but Id bet on a recently fired coach or current position coach that has been an OC before.

guys have worked under Gundy and gone on to run successful offenses elsewhere...

I want someone younger... dykes would've been alright... but outside of burnes and williams, this staff lacks youth.

JB Grimes joins Rhett Lashlee at UCONN.

I love JB. Hoping the two of them find some success.

This guy will be in charge of passing. The O won't change with Hand calling run plays, and Gus dictating the situation. Shouldn't effect recruiting too much.

Meh.
JB Grimes went from Auburn to Cincy to UConn for a reason. Happy to have Hand

His son coached at UC.
Even if we pushed him out for Hand, doesn't change that Grimes was a good coach for us. Seems with Hand we got another one who is an improvement I. Recruiting

Marcello put up an update around 3 in the morning. A lot of it is summarization of earlier stuff but here's the general update
- Three candidates have been eliminated from search: Jake Spavital (OC at WV), Sonny Dykes (TCU staff) & Chip Lindsey (doesn't meet experience requirement tho could pop back up if we miss on other ones)
- It appears the top 2 candidates right now are Mark Helfrich & Mike Yurcich. There are mixed reports about Heflrich but BM says a source tells him he still a potential option
- Money is not a concern so someone like Yurcich who is making 500K can still be pursued
- Sterlin Gilbert doesn't meet the experience criteria but as search goes on AU might start looking at younger guys and his name could pop up
- Do not expect Eddie Gran to become a candidate (247 posters keep asking about him)
- The amount of talent returning on offense helps balance out fear of losing job after one year with losses to Bama & UGA. Basically new OC should be able to find success with talent on AU roster
- It's thought Malzahn needs someone that will challenge him
- Once new OC is hired there could be in house movement with the offensive staff
- Being a QB developer is requirement #1 for new OC (though it sounds like experience is 1B)
- Gus does a great job of keeping information in house so there's always a chance a name we have not heard of (like Greg Brown) is announced out of nowhere
- Staff wants a new OC before this big recruiting weekend but it's not a priorty (don't like that but truth is most top targets this weekend are defensive guys)
- Three names Marcello is surprised haven't been mentioned: Josh Heupel (Missouri - BM has a hard on for this guy for some reason), Noel Mazzone (Texas A&M) & Brian Wright (Toledo)

Mazzone
ETA:
I don't get the Helfrich appeal. MY would seem like a fantastic hire.

Mazzone? Hell NO, his play calling was very predictable when he was here during the Tubbs era.

Yurcich is at the top of the list for me. Younger guy that has a ton of upside and the seal of approval from a guy who knows offense (Gundy).

I am assuming for a moment that we get a great OC and am now setting the over/under of how high we go for salary at $1.175M. Do you take the over or under?

Based off who Marcello thinks would be great hires I am really glad he isn't calling the shots
I don't get how play calling experience is such a requirement but Helfrich is a top target. He never called plays at Oregon. Chip Kelly and Scott Frost were calling plays when offense was rolling
To me Yurcich is as good as you can get for what we want. He has done a great job developing Rudolph and can bring some air raid passing concepts to our offense. We will see if it gets done as Gundy took a chance on him so sure there's loyalty there but given all the options mentioned I think he's the best name out there
