Sucks if true. Curious if we will use Peters as the nickel, or if they slide Dinson over and let Smoke play safety.
Better just to move Javarius Davis to Corner and have Peters at nickel. Leave safeties as is

Taken from 247s board but thought it was a good watch. ESPN's Maria Taylor and Holly Rowe visited 6 campuses on a 5 day road trip in the Southeast. They went behind-the-scenes around the football programs during fall camp, sat down with players and coaches, toured facilities, etc. Other schools visited were Clemson, Miami, Florida State, Georgia, Bama, and Auburn.

Al.com Article - Petersen quotes on AU
quote:

As No. 6 Washington prepares to face No. 9 Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff on Saturday, Petersen was asked if Washington could draw on its experience of playing the Peach Bowl against Alabama, which was a College Football Playoff semifinal in 2016, and last year's Fiesta Bowl heading into a another marquee matchup.

"I think that the quality of team we're playing is certainly like those teams we played there," Petersen said. "I look at Auburn on defense and it seems very Alabama-ish to me. It's that physical style, that really athletic, they don't give you anything, you got earn everything, they're fast, all those things. That seems really, really similar."

Alabama beat Washington 24-7 on the Peach Bowl in 2016 and held the Huskies to just 194 yards, including only 44 rushing yards thanks to sacking Jake Browning five times.
quote:

"I think it starts on the lines always," Petersen said. "I mean the front seven for Auburn and they're super athletic in the secondary. If we don't give (Browning) a chance to set his feet or get our run game, no one can have a chance. So I think Jake's going to be fine. It's, they got some guys that played a lot of football on that defensive side and they're very stout and very physical. To me, it has to do with how some guys in front of him hold up to give him a chance to do his thing."
quote:

Auburn's defense has been watching film of Browning, though Washington's wide receiver corps is rebuilding and the Huskies will have a new offensive play-caller in Bush Hamdan.

"The one thing that is a little different about it is trying to predict what the change in the offensive coordinator/play-caller will be," defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said of preparing for the game compared to watching film. "That's hard to do. But the (Petersen) has been pretty traditional with what he does. But it's still hard."

Hamdan is in his first season with Washington after serving as quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons last season. He had previous stints as an offensive coordinator at Davidson in 2014 and as co-offensive coordinator at Arkansas State in 2013, when the Red Wolves lost at Auburn in Gus Malzahn's first season as head coach. Petersen is looking forward to see what Hamdan can do against a big test.

"You talk about getting your feet wet right away?" Petersen said. "Against a defense like this, this is tough sledding. But I think it's what we love about this game, it's just so competitive and so challenging and that's how this first game is going to be. It's going to be as challenging as anything we do all season long. Bush works morning, noon and night trying to get this thing right for the kids, like all of our coaches do, but he's been on it pretty hard."

Also, not that anyone cares but of note on College Gameday Saturday Kirk Herbstreit said he's picking Washington to win vs AU and predicts them to be in the CFP

Anyone with a 247 VIP that can see if Marcello said anything about J. Dean yet? We have a little depth but could be a big deal in the opener and vs LSU if he's out.

According to Marcello, Dean was kicking butt in Fortnite last night, which would

Do the players have any idea how much some of the fanbase (I've been guilty before) obsesses over any abnormal occurrence concerning them or rumor thereof off-the-field?

Feels like most pundits are taking UW... it makes sense, they’re the safer pick... less uncertainty in what they have returning compared to AU with questions at OL and RB (wash is inexperienced at WR and their top TE is out... but no one seems to bring that up).

Washington is the safer pick... but Auburn’s got slightly more talent and a likely home field advantage. Should be close.

Wouldn't be Auburn if there wasn't some kind of rumor right before the season starts

Not sure if mentioned but Jay Tate said on his podcast that Kam Martin is up to 200lb now and feels like he has mantained speed

Martin may be able to handle more in between the tackles carries than we think if true

Also... supposedly Martin is being a more patient runner... like kerryon.

We’ll see I guess.

I get what your saying, but disagree if that is their logic, because it isnt logical, lol.

We have a proven commodity in returning a top 10 defense that will likely be top 5 this year. Washington not scoring much is the safe bet in this game and that makes us the safer pick.

On a separate note, we seem to have come through fall camp relatively unbitten by the injury bug with really just 2.5 more full practices before we just do light work later in the week. That is good, but brings me to a belief that I've had and expressed the last few years. It doesnt seem like we have a lot of 11 on 11 reps of 1s vs 1s ever in fall camp, or full scrimmages of good on good. Previous coaches did, Tuberville and Dye did it a lot. I've thought for years that plays into what I perceive as us starting slow against teams of similar talent to us. But it seems to help get us through fall camp without the numerous injuries that we always had under Tubs. Kind of a catch 22.

When was the last time we opened the season with a W against a ranked opponent?

I’ve had the exact same thoughts... getting through camp without major injuries is a good thing... but was it physical enough to get us ready for the season?

I think with our schedule... it just makes sense to get to the starting line healthy.

As for the game... Washington could have a top 10 defense of their own

Yeah, I tend to trust the coaches and dont think I know better. But damn the last 2 Clemson games have made me angry and last year our offense looked like it was the first time all 11 had set foot on the field together.

Sandman, I dunno, was Louisville ranked when we opened with them? Of course we sucked the rest of that year.
