The better complaint would "why has it taken three years to turn Kam Martin into a competent pass protector?"

Can't speak on why KM isn't better. I'm sure it has to do with his size.

On the contrary Chip said Asa is good at it because of his HS coaching. Not all HS coaches teach it / harp on it. Apparently Asa's did and their scheme was similar.

I still think AU's RB depth is fine. I still don't think you need massive dudes to tote the rock like you do

I do, you basically said Cam Martin and Malik Miller would be fine being our every down backs when I said we did not have enough beef and we were not recruiting enough beef. As well as talented backs. We just recruit projects for the most part

We need a Chubb or Damian Harris guy who can just step in a play at a high level. Not so many scat backs that need to add 20 pounds or whatever.

I never thought any of those guys we had after KJ would be good SEC backs and more than likely, none of them will. Including Cam Martin who is probably going to be the guy. Until he gets hurt

We need beef and talent bro...... And there is no reason we can't get it

Wrong on Miller. I've never advocated for him. I'm a Devan Barrett guy which is obviously much better

I still disagree with the projects part

Well ya it would be nice if we could land guys like Nick Chubb or Damian Harris but we don't NEED them to be successful

I was definitely off on Barrett (though I still think he carves out a role in our offense before he leaves) but Martin is clearly going to be apart of the rotation this fall. Then you got Whitlow & Martin who are both challenging as freshman. Seems like we have in fact done a good job recruiting talent/size

I think there's plenty of talent & beef on the roster right now & we will add more this signing class

Also it's Kam not Cam

Staff has legitimate concerns about KM being an every down back.

Please link the report that any of our coaches said this..

There is little doubt that Asa and Boobee are more physically suited to be our bell-cow RB but the main reason K-Mart will start is because the coaches want to be able to trust the RB to know who/when to block, not just their ability to block and K-Mart simply knows the offense better.

Experience doesn’t always translate to in-game decision making. I know class room intelligence doesn’t always translate to on the field intelligence but KM is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and that isn’t just based on how he speaks. I’m thinking that along with KM’s size issue, Asa and Boobee may be able to process those blocking decisions quicker and possess a better ability to grasp more complex concepts within the offense. I may or may not have had a class with KM and other players, that is where this is coming from. KM will be used very much like McCalebb when it’s all said and done, imo.

... concerns?

Yep, got'em when it comes to anyone being an every down back. Seems to be a problem every year come Amen Corner.

Still, Horton has his doubts about the smaller Martin’s ability to be an every-down back. While Martin has what it takes to be the No. 1 back on the field, his size might force the Tigers to go with a better rotation in 2018.
“The one thing that I do know about the running backs that we’ve had in the past is they’ve all been 210 pounds, 215 pounds,” Horton said. “Well, Kam Martin is 195. And so I don’t know that answer. I think, and we’ve wanted to do this the last couple of years but it just hasn’t worked out, is we want to play more than one guy.

This really is huge. With our defense, being able to bomb punts and consistently put the other offense starting inside the 20 is a big deal. It should help give the defense more opportunities to give off the field. Should help reduce the ppg given up from last year.

Someone needs to tell all the damn 5 star recruits they keep getting then. The recruiting is why I think he's building a monster over in Athens. Couple of more classes like last year, then we can see our fellow AU fambly members post on ITAT and 247 that Smart isn't a very good coach, he can only recruit. I haven't seen those threads about Saban in a while.

Time will tell; however he'll have to do so without Mark Emmert support.

The guy had Saban's back on every move and damn near personally created a Dracula level blood sucker. You couldn't stake the heart because no one could touch him. Legendary loans and Red Chargers - hey no problem. Hugh Freeze would have hardly missed a paycheck before pimping in Tuscaloosa?

Kirby's coasting on Georgia recruiting at the moment and a second AU win would have been big. It'll be interesting to see how bold he's allowed to become.

thUGA has always had top recruiting classes. This isn't anything new, with the exception of Auburn usually stealing some of those top players from thUGA. As you can see this year, Auburn has done that again. I'm sure the hard negative recruiting Skirby has been doing took a hit when Gus got the extension (even though I still don't agree with him getting it, because he hasn't earned it).

negative. The recruiting they have done the past two years is even above what Bama has done in the past. It's GOD mode and they HAVE to be cheating

Wed Morning Scrimmage notes:

quote:

GUS MALZAHN

-- Team had 100-plus play scrimmage, with about 40 plays apiece for first- and second-teamers. It was a 75/25 run/pass split.

-- Cord Sandberg and Joey Gatewood both went live.

-- Younger running backs rotated behind Kam Martin. Was a good opportunity to get information on the running backs and help establish a pecking order, though there were a couple of fumbles.

-- Calvin Ashley practiced.

-- Jack Driscoll hasn't solidified the starting job at right tackle yet, so competition is ongoing with him and Austin Troxell.

-- Mike Horton continues to alternate between center and right guard.

-- There was a scoop-and-score defensive touchdown on the third-team defense.

-- Both punters went live and saw pressure, which was good. Good battle going on.

-- Injury updates: Daquan Newkirk and Nick Brahms both got some individual work and one-on-one opportunities. Malzahn was "encouraged" to see those guys. No updated timetable for Will Hastings and Eli Stove.

-- Possible to have situational punting? "I think anything's possible, but I'm not ready to say that yet."

-- Ian Shannon "getting a lot of work" as backup to Anders Carlson.

-- "Huge focus" is improving kickoff coverage, which Auburn was very bad at last season.

-- Along with Chandler Cox and JaTarvious Whitlow, Malzahn says two other guys are getting some Wildcat reps -- but he won't say who.

-- Ian Shannon, Arryn Siposs and Cord Sandberg are all getting looks at holder.

-- Coynis Miller "has a skill set" but they're trying to get him in shape so he can get on the field early this season.

-- Last two practices of fall camp, before classes start next week, will be a lot of situational work. May do a scrimmage for the younger players on Sunday if they feel they need more info.

-- Takeo Spikes and Charles Barkley both spoke to the team this week, challenged them to take the next step. "It was a special time, it really was." Gene Chizik also started off camp speaking to the team.

-- Planning a movie night and rookie night, maybe some bowling and stuff. Fall camp "has been good so far, but we got to finish this thing -- finish it and build a foundation for this first game."
