Definitely. I know multiple people who have health issues from alcohol and have dealt with alcoholism. Don’t know a single person who became dependent on weed. Most of them have benefited from it.

I think you can legally smoke crack and shoot heroin in Oregon now.

Does anyone understand the new Liberal agenda? They want big government as far as taxes and handouts, but no governance of drugs or the criminal justice system.

I don't live in Alabama. I live in a podunk area of Florida. I have seen the lottery build new schools left and right in our area. It is a massive money generating tool for every state who has one.

I believe a couple of LSU guys challenged somebody to a fight at Sonic, recorded and posted it and the other guy never showed up. I remember seeing the video at some point.

Thank you for that. I never understood it. If I'm choosing a place to fight a stranger from the internet, it's probably not going to be Sonic.

If you actually want to understand the logic, it is this

Oregon still has heavy criminal penalties like all other states for non personal use amounts of heroin and other hard drugs. Distribution is still a serious crime in Oregon.

For amounts deemed consistent with personal use, they view this as a medical addiction problem and are looking to spend money on addiction services for them. They believe criminal punishment for personal use has failed to be a deterrent in their state

Will it work? Who knows. To act like this policy is somehow a lawless drug free for all is pretty absurd though.

My problem is use in public. No one wants to see people shooting up on public spaces.

Not two LSU guys - it was an AU fan recording and a Bama fan who was meeting up with another Bama fan (actually a mod from a site called The Gooler).

I knew both the guys in the video. “Leo” was an SECRant poster (actually the guy who introduced me to this site). Sadly, he died suddenly about 9 years ago. His twin brother still posts.

Here is the encounter in all its glory:

I don’t want to get into the politics of this. But I will say that regardless of what I think — Oregon put it to a vote and citizens decided for themselves that they want to try this.

Thats how these things should be done. Hopefully we get meaningful data from it to inform legislation in the future

I like to err on the side of freedom. Good for them if that is how they want to live. I still want to walk with my wife down Pine street in Seattle and not watch someone take a dump.

How many $100 fines can a person accumulate?

Reminds me of a story. When I was in Birmingham after college for an internship, I had just parked in a lot on the northside near the offices. Turn the corner down the alley and through another fenced lot I saw a guy kinda looking around.

He dropped his pants and unloaded. It was awful. He appeared to be well kept. He had a decent suit on and I saw him occasionally the next few months before I left.

Just a man that made it as far as he could Not really relevant to what we are talking about but it was the right spot for my story. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk

This did not legalize hard drug use only changed the punishment.

People will now either face a $100 fine or be require to complete an addicts rehabilitation course. View it similar to getting a speeding ticket or avoid fine if you complete driving school.

Agreed. Addiction is a serious problem in society and it is clear that we need to start thinking of new solutions to dealing with it.

Maybe this works, maybe it doesn't. Just clear new approaches need to be looked into regarding addiction

The problem with that logic or "system" is, you cant have personal use without distribution.

Decriminalize means to remove criminal penalties. Personal use is still illegal, as is distribution. All that changed are the assessed penalties / criminal record implications, not the legal status of these drugs.

So I'm not quite sure what the flawed logic is you are referring to.

Okay.

Legal, illegal... What do those terms matter when meaningful consequences are removed?
