That is a valid concern. I don’t think he is in a good situation to be playing it safe though. He needs to get to 9 wins to be comfortable and some imagination and more gutsy decisions are needed to get there.

He needs to be on the field more period
Why? Have you considered that the reason he hasn't been is that he isn't good enough to be on the field? Gus is coaching for his job right now and is more than likely playing the guys who give us the best chance to win.

Any word on Mark Antony Richards? DJ is still hurt but is Richards an option to shore up our rb or wr positions?

You are talking about Gus here. The coach that thought JJ was a Heisman lock, because of how he looked in practice. The coach that let Lamar Jackson go to Lousville. The coach that has made so many head scratching decisions over the past 5 years.
And it's not just Gatewood. People have been calling for Joiner, Shivers, and other players to get on the field. You guys just get so defensive when it comes to the golden boy legacy.

Give me 5 examples of guys who Gus has had on the bench whom fans were clamoring for more playing time who have gone on to thrive at Auburn or elsewhere. Heck I'll take 3.
This isn't just the case at Auburn, it's the case most everywhere. Sure, there are poor recruiting evaluations sometimes, but most D1 coaches put their best players on the field as much as possible.
The most glaring example of this stupid fan syndrome is when everyone was begging and waiting for Jeremy Johnson to start, while a top 5 AU quarterback of all time was playing right in front of our eyes.

4 game Gus being his coach is just as likely. Joey is a freak and our offense sucks. He needs to be on the field in some way.
