I’ve heard chatter that the line of thinking is he doesn’t want to blow a bunch of NIL money until we have a roster for it, then watch out. Obviously a gamble for this year. I get the idea though.

That line of thinking will get you fired before you finish your rebuilding. It’s the portal game now. Freeze better adapt.

Nah… I disagree. It’s not portal game now or bust. Guess who was more active in the portal than anyone else? Deion. And he sucks. I like that Hugh is building his base from high school. It takes longer, but if you’re not an idiot you can be patient. 25 and 26 classes are going to be insane and then we will be cooking.

You know who else was very active in the portal this past offseason, because they lost a lot of players? Uat. You know who has been very active in the portal the entire time he’s been at old piss? Kiffin. With how gutted the program was after the Haskins debacle, Auburn would be a lot further along right now if they ponied up the money to not just get portal players but the top portal players. That’s just the truth.

Ok sure, but Hugh has chosen to do it through high school, which I like. To me it builds a more permanent foundation. I’m sure his portal game will pick up this year after he sees what not doing so does.

The hard truth is that you can absolutely have a strong base built from high school recruiting, but if the results aren't there on the field and a coaching change is made they are just as likely to leave as a team built from the portal.

It seems the thought is he is all about h.s recruits and I’m for that as well but the money we’ve saved allegedly needs to be spent this off season in a few pieces.

Sure, and FSU was also a huge Portal player and they are 0-3.
The reality is that Kiffin and DeBoer are actually very good coaches. That is the real underlying important factoid here (Bama also already has a built-in identity as a winning team, regardless of how many players they lost). Deion isn't a good coach and neither is Norvell.
A bad or average coach may be able to Portal their way to wins under the right circumstance, but you'll see that it doesn't actually negate coaching deficiencies.
Freeze needs to figure out what the hell they are doing from a coaching and preparation perspective. Two receivers from New Mexico running beside each other down the middle of the field and not one of them is being covered by anyone is not a talent/Portal discussion.
