Enter Yohan Traore, who committed to Auburn on Thursday. Traore was formerly committed to LSU but backed off his pledge after the firing of Will Wade. Auburn quickly emerged as a top contender for Traore, even hosting him on an unofficial visit before the Tigers left for the NCAA Tournament.

Traore is a top-tier talent, currently ranked as the No. 15 overall player and the No. 4 center in the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2022. His recruit score of 0.9933 is the second-highest Auburn has ever landed, trailing only Smith. It’s even higher than what the Tigers picked up in the transfer portal with Kessler.

Traore is, quite literally, a massive addition for an Auburn team looking to remain a consistent contender in the arms race that is SEC basketball. 247Sports lists him at 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds. He is an immediate boost for a frontcourt that could lose both of its All-Americans.

But Traore isn’t the typical 5-star basketball recruit. A native of Tours, France, Traore left the prestigious sports academy INSEP in his home country for America in August 2020. He played his junior season at Prolific Prep in California, but he came off the bench on a team loaded with elite big men and didn’t record a ton of stats.

Traore then caught fire on the AAU circuit, playing for Texas’ Southern Assault and California’s Dream Vision. Last summer, he was ranked outside of the top 70 nationally for the class of 2022. His rise to becoming a 5-star was highlighted by standout showings at events such as the NBPA Top 100 Camp and the 3SSB Adidas Tournament in Hoover, Ala.

At the NBPA Camp, Traore ranked third in scoring (12.4 points per game) and 12th in field goal percentage (51.9%). According to Jason Jordan of Sports Illustrated, Traore averaged 25 points and 14 rebounds per game in Hoover. (He also shot 80% from the free-throw line, which is an eye-popping stat for a physical big man.)

After a busy summer, Traore played his senior season at Dream City Christian in Glendale, Arizona. He racked up major scholarship offers and high-profile visits before committing to LSU in late January. Less than two months later, he was back on the market, with Auburn pouncing on the opportunity.

Huge get. And rumors of Keon as well. If so sign me up for that. Outside I Quinnerly he was the best player on that team. Has great hops as well as length. Would be a great 3 in our system.

Not even remotely buying the Keon stuff until it happens. Both because I have a hard time believing it and also because it would make me very happy

I’m with you on that. But will say his discipline is closer in line with Bruce then anyone else on that team and he is a legit NBA prospect. Just needs some attention.

Traore is also now the Tigers second-highest ranked recruit in program history (247 Sports Composite) behind only Jabari Smith, as well as only the fourth five-star in Auburn Basketball history.

We now have a lineup of:

PG- Jasper/Donaldson
SG- Green/KD
SF- Flan/Westry
PF- Williams/Traore
C- Kessler?/Traore/Cardwell.

If we get Kessler back and add anything else to that line up we should be competing for another SEC title and potentially more.

One way or another it seems like the staff is intent on improving at the 3 based on our targets. Roster will look great

Stoked about the Traore pick up, but still worried about 3-point shooting until we have proven shooters on campus.

Green at the 1 and Donaldson at the 2 would be my expectation to start the season.

Possibly, but I was just trying to balance the positions. I think Green turns the ball over too much to be our primary PG and having Jasper,Green, and Donaldson at PG creates a log jam and leaves us with only KD at the 2, which was a problem last year imo.

Do we know how good Donaldson is? That’s tough on a 3* to come in and expect to be the shooter as a freshman.
I’m still not happy hoping our guards all improve at least 5% on outside shooting.

Rumor has it Davison is gonna test the NBA waters. Nate Oats doesn’t expect him back at Alabama. Is that an addition or subtraction for bammer? Dude was terrible this year. Great athlete terrible basketball player. Needs some big time coaching in my opinion before close to being NBA player ready but some dumb GM will probably draft him on upside

Didn’t he come from a small school classification.

I remember those days Auburn HAD to recruit those types of Athletes just to try to compete in the SEC. They would have skills but little to none basketball skills.

Sometimes we found a diamond most of the time they would be schooled against sec teams with all basketball ball player skills.

Yes but he also tore it up in AAU his last 2 years but no one scouted enough to know he couldn’t shoot. So by the time conference play started most SEC had some scout on him and just let him shoot the 3
