"Free-agent outfielder B.J. Upton has agreed to a five-year deal worth $75.25 million with the Atlanta Braves, a baseball source told ESPN."
"Upton, 28, hit .246 with 28 homers, 78 RBIs and 31 stolen bases for Tampa Bay last season."
"His first full season was 2007, when he hit a career-best .300 with 24 homers and 22 stolen bases."
Just to remind everyone how good we have it now. Coppy and Hart did a phenomenal job - infractions aside.

Yeah that's it.
Uggla's contract was bad, too.

Uggla..did not have the decency to continue doing steroids for us. What an a-hole.

Dan Uggla and his forearms was a bad signing. $60 mil and I don’t think he ever batted over .200.

instead of figuring out the worst, I'll just keep a running list going.
Melvin
Uggla
Mike Hampton (even though the Braves didn't initiate the deal, they still had to pay a lot of it later down the road I think which inhibited them)
Derek Lowe (4x15 was too much for a pitcher like that)

Worst and most expensive BJ in history.

Kenshin Kawakami: 3 yrs, $23M + $2M signing bonus is another bad one.

The Braves version of the Bobby Bonilla contract: LINK
quote:
...the Braves are still paying former reliever Bruce Sutter, who played with the Braves from 1985 to 1988. The 1979 NL Cy Young Winner signed a six-year, $9.1 million deal with the Braves before the 1985 season, but Sutter opted to have the money deferred.
“Sutter was only paid about $750,000 per year while under the Braves’ control,” Lewis wrote. “For the thirty years after he retired — 30!!! — the Braves agreed to pay him no less than $1.12 million per year, and potentially more if interest rates spiked above a negotiated floor of 12.3 percent. [They haven’t.] That ends in 2021...

What we gave up for the M Teixeira rental was pretty disappointing

At least he actually produced for us. I liked Matt Kemp, it felt like he was good for the fans and the clubhouse. Even managed to find his old swing after dropping a few lbs.

Bruce Sutter

Those payments of $750,000 during his playing career and the $1.12 million that followed are only interest payments, Lewis points out. That means in 2022, the Braves still owe Sutter the $9.1 million that he deferred.
Sutter recorded just 40 saves and posted a 4.55 ERA from 1985 to 1988, which included Sutter missing the 1987 season as he recovered from shoulder surgery. The Braves, meanwhile, lost 96, 89, 92 and 106 games in the four seasons Sutter was on the squad.
"In total, Sutter will earn north of $45 million for his three years being terrible as a member of the Atlanta Braves."

I saw Uggla at a game a few weeks ago. At least he wasn’t a frickin prick like Melvin Upton was about suddenly not being able to hit.

Ted could just piss away money because he was still making millions from broadcasting the games on the superstation
even in last place.

I would assume he's getting paid off an annuity that was purchased a while back. All future contracts were probably negotiated in the purchase from Time Warner

Everyone roasts the Mets for the Bobby Bonilla deferred deal, but the Sutter deal should honestly get about the same amount of shite. I guess it is just that the Mets are typically associated with failure and they are in THE media market, but still.
