IMO the biggest issue with mass transportation in ATL is the walking distance from the stations to the surrounding buildings/developments. ATL is extremely unwalkable compared to CHI/NYC, you really have to add stations or free buses that are directly next to some of the major work/play hubs if people are ever going to use it
I really don't think it's a huge issue.
I know that Coke,CHOA,GT and I believe Turner all have shuttle bus picks ups from Marta stations there also shuttles for some employees at Atlantic Station. Many hotels do it arse well.
Just think the bigger issue is getting trains up 75 and
85 (past Brookhaven/Chamblee) which will probably never happen.I know a bunch of folks that live up in Cobb that work for Turner and Coke who would gladly take train into the city every day

I live in Decatur(about a 5 minute walk to the Avondale station) and work at Coke. It's still quicker to drive than take Marta. It doesn't help that we have two young kids, so I'd probably take Marta if I didn't have kids and a wife that works too, so we have to drop off/pick up every day, and that's just not realistic if one or both took Marta. I'd have to get on at Avondale, switch trains at 5 points, then get a shuttle to the office. That's probably around an hour at least, and it takes about 30-40 to drive.
And my wife works in midtown(Regions building) and she's in the same situation.
I'm all for expanding/improving Marta, but as has already been brought up, I'm just not sure how that's possible in some areas. I feel like this city has almost gotten to the point that it's just not possible to expand in the bulk of the metro area.

Ok,my post directly refrenced people who lived up 75 and 85 who would have straight shot to 10th Street and North Avenue stations.
Anyway, how often does Coke run shuttles to the N Avenue
station?

I’d sacrifice half an hour to be able to answer calls, emails, read, etc to not sit in the car.
That’s just me but part of the problem is that no one wants to be even the slightest bit inconvenienced.
Therefore the massive congestion of single passenger cars.

The AS shuttles are open to the public and are pretty solid.

Are they still free?

I wasn't replying directly to you, just making a general statement about the fact that for folks that live in town, it's often quicker to drive than take Marta.

Not totally sure. My guess would be every 15 minutes. I know there's one that goes from the Coke campus to World of Coke and the Suntrust building(we had a bunch of people working there for a while, but not sure how many are still there) and I think it was every 15 last time I took it. It's been about a year.

You say it's not a huge issue but then suggest someone needs to transfer to a shuttle after riding MARTA
So the average person will have to drive to their marta station, take marta to their stop, take a shuttle to their office and then do the same on their way home no one is going to do that. Just way too many obstacles.

Maybe not every day, but I'd do it.

So why does Coke,Turner,GT,CHOA and Emory Healthcare provide the service for employees?

J
So nobody is riding those shuttles?Must be a huge
waste...

Gwinnett County just authorized a referendum for March 19th to join MARTA
quote:
Gwinnett’s Board of Commissioners made two historic decisions Wednesday morning, approving a once-unthinkable contract with MARTA and calling for a public referendum on the matter.
The referendum being called for March 19, 2019, not this November, was a surprise. It drew the ire of many transit supporters gathered for the meeting.
But both votes, held during a special called 8 a.m. meeting, were significant steps toward bringing heavy rail service to the county. District 3 Commissioner Tommy Hunter cast the lone “no” vote for the contract but voted for the referendum.
“I feel as though we're going to be paying our share," Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said of the contract. "But we've got a lot of protection for how Gwinnett dollars are used."

If you look at Chicago or New York, Wrigley and Yankee stadium are far from downtown. So Suntrust being ridiculed for moving out, well that’s how the big cities do it. It would be nice to have more between SunTrust and downtown. Marta to Suntrust would be nothing short of amazing.

we went to the Braves series at Yankee stadium, but our hotel was in battery park. There is a line that is a straight shot to the bronx from that area with no transfers. it took about 45 minutes. That was a freakin haul, and it was one of the express trains that didn't make all of the stops.

Always thought Atlantic Station would've been perfect for Turner Field back in the 90's and now we're stuck with that God awful development.

I support MARTA and wish more of Atlanta did as well.
About a year ago now I decided to give Park-and-Ride a chance.
I live 2 miles away from the Dunwoody station along the redline rail and my office is two blocks on a right angle from another (Lindbergh).
My commute was 400 to Piedmont in Buckhead, which is a close distance. However, it takes 30 minutes travel time UNDER THE MOST OPTIMAL OF CONDITIONS AND LUCK .
Now I can get from the Dunwoody MARTA rail station to my office in the same amount of time it takes me to drive the two miles from the gates of my neighborhood to the rail station.
I’m never delayed. I don’t get stuck in that awful traffic on 400 with people backed up past Sydney Marcus bc of the connector merge, etc. I’m to the point where I’m the evenings when going back into the city, I no longer want to drive. And now I have the options of getting a bicycle, an e-scooter or an e-moped outside the rail stations. Or call Uber/Lyft. Also, depending on which village in the city I want to get to, every new shopping center has free transportation buses to their respective villages.
Back late spring early summer MARTA began the MARTA-Fresh-Market where one day each week a different rail station has a local farm-to-table Farmer’s Market set up for the healthy and convenient way to make groceries for foods. And it’s not WholeFoods on the sidewalk fleecing your wallets, it is actual organic and conventional farm-to-table perishables ready to be made.
Bums? The rail stations are policed at each entrance and exit and workers are sitting next to every escalator elevator and turn style.
Expansion plans? Yes they are vital to expanding our city and we need to make sure we are at these meeting and participating NOW, so in the future we can be happy with the designs and not complain bc the Democrats decided how they wanted to be catered to.

Hey you can sit in traffic for hours while we all go about it right away and save time and money and headaches!
Obstacles? These shuttles are waiting there the moment you walk out and when one pulls out another pulls up.
