MLB looking to expand playoffs to 7 teams from each league

In this concept, the team with the best record in each league would receive a bye to avoid the wild-card round and go directly to the Division Series. The two other division winners and the wild card with the next best record would each host all three games in a best-of-three wild-card round. So the bottom three wild cards would have no first-round home games.

The division winner with the second-best record in a league would then get the first pick of its opponent from those lower three wild cards, then the other division winner would pick, leaving the last two wild cards to play each other.

quote:

The plan is to have this all play out on a show on the Sunday night the regular season ends and have representatives picking teams on live TV — think the NCAA selection show, but just with the teams making the selections.

Well this sounds wild. Last year the Dodgers would get the bye and the Braves would have selected? The Mets maybe? To play at home in a 3 game series?

Seems all weird to me. Don't see why it needs to change.

I'm not sure about this.

When they introduced the 2nd WC spot I wished they would have just made the LDS series best of 7 instead of best of 5.

I guess their thinking is that it'll attract more viewers but I don't agree with this theory. You either like baseball or you don't. Changing the playoff format in OCT isn't going to get my wife or people who don't like baseball all that much to watch all of a sudden.

Same theory holds true for the XFL. If you don't like Football, you're not all of a sudden going to watch the XFL cause it has different teams/rules compared to the NFL.

They are going to ruin baseball by trying to fix it in stupid arse ways. This makes no sense.

They just need to focus on making sure the game stays relevant amongst the youth. The fact they clamp down on who can post clips and highlights from games is so laughable.

The NBA is swimming in relevance online because everyone is always sharing the crazy thing that happened in a random Tuesday night game. The MLB treats their game footage like a fricking nuclear code and only allows a select few the ability to share the clips.

The only way to consume baseball is by following MLB on twitter, following your favorite team's socials/broadcasts, and ESPN highlights. Seems to me like that's not very conducive to attracting new fans, unless they magically get interested in something they rarely hear about.

More playoff teams = More playoff games = Larger tv contract
