Saw this in a tweet yesterday from Jon Heyman:
quote:

Freddie Freeman and Braves have been talking but there’s still a gap so free agency appears a surprisingly strong possibility. Both sides want to get it done and that’s the likelihood eventually. Reminiscent of Turner/LAD and HOF Jeter/NYY talks, great FA who stayed.

Does AA really not get this done during the season and risk letting one of the team's marquee players leave?

I want Freddie to be a Brave For Life but I don't think we'll be able to throw the offer at him the way LAD or LAA will be able to, Freddie is a SoCal native, and he already lives in Cali during the off-season.

I hope Chelsea has some strong ties to this area that might impact his decision. I have no idea where she grew up and if her family lives around here.

I think I remember reading somewhere that she is from south Florida (not sure if Miami but down that way) and went to UCF.

I’m glad Freddie isn’t letting them lowball him, but honestly, I think he wants to go home.

Chipper signed 3 year deals late in his career to help the Braves. I don't know why, but I can't picture Freddie doing the same.

He's coming back.

It'll be a PR nightmare if they let him walk. I'm talking 1000's of ST packages being cancelled.

If thats all he wants and they won't agree, its shameful. That is a bargain for what he brings to the all sides of the table.

Sorry, sorry can't imagine AA letting anything leak out from those negotiations.Ive underestimated him too many times and he always seems to pull off the improbable and work these negotiations out.

There is a lot of inherent risk when giving a player in his 30s a 5 year deal like that.

Yeah, I completely forgot about this. Great point. AA doesn't let anything leak out

Doubtful, but things could get leaked from the other side. I don't know how Freeman's management operate.

I think he's gone.

Braves cannot(will not) match what others can offer. If he wants to go home, I'm guessing Angels, especially with Pujols off the books. Their tv contract is enormous. Freeman/Trout combo, wow.

I think the most comfortable I would be is 4/$120M. Any more average AAV or any more years would be too rich for my blood and I would be fine letting someone else take that deal. While some teams are in the situation to eat dead money at the end of these long deals, the Braves are not one of them and paying a (likely declining) 37 year old Freeman $30M when Acuna and Albies deals start to really kick in would be a tough pill to swallow.

Never happened before if I can recall. The "other side" seems to keep their mouth shut as well.

Completely agree here, 4/120 is a great deal all around. The real hangup is Ozuna/Pederson/Rosario/outfield in all of this as well. Will Ozuna be suspended, or breach of contract. More and more it sounds like the contract won't be able to be voided, but what do I know.

Freddie has said he wants to be a brave his entire career a-la chipper and I believe him. Now if we throw some insulting low-ball offer he gone. Or if one of the Cali teams offers stupid money he might leave. Today I think there is a better chance that he is a brave come 2022 than not.

I hope he is here for at least 4 or 5 more years. It seems like we are right at peak window.

The real hangup is Ozuna/Pederson/Rosario/outfieldRosario is a free agent and Pederson's buyout is 2.5 they are a non factor going forward

$24 million a year for the prime of an Allstar is a solid deal. Getting an Allstar and an additional MVP candidate for that price is something teams would kill for. There is no excuse for this front office not to be going all in every year through the life of those deals. And if Freddie walks, there is no real fallback plan.
