Why do I have the horrible sinking feeling that we'll get bounced 4-2 in the play-in game by the dodgers/padres with ender/Camargo killing multiple potential rallies?

I would honestly consider that a successful season with not bringing back several pieces of last years team while other teams in the division are trending upward. At this moment we have swapped Morton and Smyly for Ozuna, Duvall, O'Day, Hamels(irrelevent), Melencon, Green, Flowers, Markakis, and the rather irrelevant Hechavarria. Not one single offensive player has been signed to replace the ones mentioned above at this point.

Ozuna was a lot of offense this year. His bat in the middle will be missed. The rest of those guys are mostly replaceable - the Mets are also spending and mortgaging prospects to win now and they have a good enough top of the rotation to compete

The problem is that with an owner like Cohen they aren't really mortgaging their future as much as we might like to think. being willing and able to eat bad salaries or dead money, like the dodgers did with shields, makes a lot easier to maintain a solid farm system that you supplant with superstar free agents. Everything that I have heard about Cohen is that he wants to copy the dodger blueprint, meaning spending big on players, but also spending big on scouting and development. It's going to be very hard to stay competitive long-term if we continue being so risk averse

LM doesn't care as long as the Battery makes money.

The important thing is I can now eat a fancy burger and drink a craft beer while watching the Braves get trounced by the Cardinals or Dodgers.

The refusal to go find a starting pitcher at the deadline last year irritated me at the time and really makes me mad in hindsight. Last year was our window. It slammed shut when Cohen bought the Mets.

If we had one more quality starter, we win the World Series.

The talent is still there and affordable enough for this team to make a run, but the front office has frankly been a clown show recently. Ignored starting pitching in-season last year, tripped over themselves to pay Morton and smyly double what they were projected at, and now suddenly want to plead poverty rather than be in the top half of the league in payroll. I increasingly believe that they will end up lowballing Freddie and we will watch him walk to a team that actually cares about winning.

Morton was a very good signing. And he was signed w/the intent of winning in October, which he's done a lot of.

This is a bad take.

Freddie is retiring as a career Brave.

These past few weeks have been very odd regarding the Braves front office to me. Now granted, there is still more time, but not much. To come out of the gate swinging and sign Smyly and Morton is one thing, but those moves only make sense if you’re plan was to replace Ozuna and the missing bullpen pieces. It wreaks of AA thinking he had a certain dollar amount back in November but to all of a sudden it being cut back. There is just no way you pass on a Pederson or Rosario with the deals they got and the deficiencies we have unless the budget was slashed all to hell. One would think you sign a Morton, Rosario, and a well established reliever instead, which could have been done with the money given to Smyly. As of right now we are 35-40 million under what a full year last year would have been. That’s a pretty significant cut.

I don’t share you’re confidence in this. I certainly think that he wants to, but I also think there is at least a 40% chance he looks around for a better winning opportunity if the Braves don’t have as good of season this coming season, and don’t do much to improve the team at the deadline this season if it’s needed. I can’t imagine the front office would be so stupid as to offer him a one or two year deal for 25 million. If it’s less than a four year extension of at least 100 million, I wouldn’t even come to the table if I were him, even that would be a discount.

He'll retire a lifelong Brave. If he hung on through the rebuild then he's sticking around.

I'd bet my mortgage on it.

I see a marginal difference between the Morton and Hamels signings. Its another one year cover your arse move that looks like high reward, low risk, but only when you don't consider the possible benefit of using an apparently tight budget on other needs. Moves like that have worked out well with Ozuna and Donaldson, but always relying on them isn't a winning long-term strategy.

I said its an increasing feeling. At the start of the offseason I would have given it a 95% chance he was a lifer. now? I'm probably around 65% that this front office won't try to bs him. there are obviously still a lot of moving parts to that, and I don't doubt that Freddie would really like to stay in Atlanta. But if everyone preforms at 2020 levels, then Freddie might be the most in demand free agent in the coming class, even with the absurd amount of talent available. I simply don't trust AA to take the kind of long term risk that might be necessary

That's where you're wrong. Morton is healthy, Hamels never was and yes that was a misstep on AA's part, but he didn't make that same mistake w/Morton. I think you'll be eating crow on this one come the end of the season.

Jon Morosi says the Braves are the leader in the clubhouse for Ozuna.

We shall see....

Dodgers sign Bauer.

So far this offseason, the Braves have signed Charlie Morton (solid) and Drew Smyly (meh) and probably won't bring Ozuna back unless a market doesn't develop for him.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers, who we couldn't win 1 out of 3 games against with a chance to go to (and probably win) the World Series, just signed a phenomenal pitcher who is the reigning NL Cy Young winner.

The Padres have made trades to add Blake Snell, who would be the #1 pitcher on the Braves, and Yu Darvish, who should be really good pitching in that stadium.

The Mets went out and traded for Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco while adding James McCann.

frick Anthopoulos. Dude needs to get off his arse and do something. The other NL contenders are slamming our WS window shut.

Maybe the only way we can compete is to hope that this razor thin margin approach will come through because we simply can't keep up with top 5 market teams.

But if so, that chance probably came and went in 2020.

I simply do NOT understand the lack of additions and signings to our team since we signed the 2 starters.

It's obvious we had bullpen departures and the bullpen was a major strength for us last year with our starting pitching rotation having so many injuries and unknowns.

I just cannot understand why we haven't re-signed Ozuna. His contribution and value to last year's team is hard to measure. He made a huge impact on not only his production, but those around him in the lineup.

And the bullpen.... I just can't understand why we haven't added to our team.... our team that is capable of winning the world series.

It's been too quiet of an offseason to have what we have coming back, and the potential for the core of this team.
