I guess if we're looking for Arkansas fans caring whether or not Petrino succeeds at Louisville, your thread is a good place to start?

I don't care what you blame his current performance or lack thereof on... but if you think Petrino's scandal/firing didn't have any effect on his ability to coach, recruit, hire staff etc going forward you're dim.

You're also being dim if you think people aren't going to associate Petrino with the last time Arkansas football tasted success, because it's a fact. At the end of the day it wouldn't have mattered if it was Donald fricking Duck leading the team... the majority of Arkansas fans enjoyed the program being relevant for a change.

Maybe the guy hurt your feelings in some fashion... don't care.

So, wouldn't it have effected his ability here? Even if he wasn't fired there would still be a scandal.

If that whole drama had unfolded in front of the cameras and he stayed at Arkansas it most likely would have affected the guy's results at Arkansas. No doubt.

If the story had stayed at merely wrecking a motorcycle, that probably wouldn't have made much of an impact.
Once everything else made it to the media, then it was over. The flow of information could have been managed differently, but in regards to winning... well:
quote:

“Yes, winning is important,” Long told fans at the Little Rock Touchdown Club this week. “Now contrast that if you’re a win-at-all-cost program which we’re not and I’ve said many, many times we’re not, then you don’t worry about the academics, you don’t worry about the conduct, you just win.

“And you know what? When I arrived here 10 years ago, that’s not what the leaders wanted at the time and certainly that’s certainly not what we’ve delivered."

I honestly don't see how it could have been contained. If we were talking 20 or 30 years ago maybe but even just 7 years ago it is hard to keep stuff like that wrapped up. Plus the backfire is huge if you try to control that kind of stuff and get caught.

I guess that would depend on one's interpretation of what exactly transpired, and who was initially privy to that information.

I agree in general but consider: There have been plenty of stories about Urban Meyer having sex (also having a child?) with a UF student (booster's daughter), and of his recurring substance abuse at UF (which he later admitted), but none of this impaired his ability to perform coaching duties at a high level.
If even a fraction of those rumblings are true then those occurrences were handled with a high level of discretion... agreed?

It all boils back down to those in the know during early stages of anything controversial, and where they deem their best interests lie.

None of this has anything to do with the fact that the program he runs absolutely tanks in year 5.

It was blamed on Krag and Smile not know what they were doing, but now that myth is being laid to rest as Petrino drives the bus off the cliff himself while yet again his recruiting shows no hope of a quick turn around, so it must be Jeff Long who causes all of this.

I think the real answer to all of this is that the guys saying hiring petrino would set the program back 10 years turned out to be pretty accurate

Had we hired someone who could recruit the South, wasn't too stubborn for his own good, and had a S&C program worth a fart in a hurricane we'd already be back.

Setting the program back ten years? That was driving away Holtz and Hatfield back in the day. Hell that reset us to when John C. Futrall started football for all intents and purposes.

What if we hired Jimmy Johnson instead of Holtz?

We might be Oklahoma-ish today.

Relatively speaking that would be a drastic upgrade at this point.

Fully agree. It’s like some hate that he had success here.

We might be exactly where we are.

Broyles was an amazing coach and a visionary AD but he would have drove Jimmy Johnson off in a couple of years.

Petrino’s seat might be warming up in Louisville. They’re getting their arse beat tonight by Georgia Tech.

He’s going to get ran out of Louisville.
