quote:that's not what I'm saying. You don't have to cheat to win. But it's ok to get guys who aren't the best people. I mean for example it was against any rules for urban to sign Aaron Hernandez but he knew he was involved with gangs already but he also knew he was good at football, could help him win, and thought he could keep him under control for 4 years until he left Gainesville. Which he did, who cares what happens after that? This is an extreme example but I'm saying you have to be willing to get some guys like bama and Georgia do that are suspect in the character department or the ones who need to take all of the classes you tell them to. They don't all have to.be rocket scientist and humanitarians
And I truly do get the gist of "win at all costs" because it appeals to the base of me

Quite honestly, this was probably the biggest downfall with the Beilema hire. He has no southern roots.
Chad Morris or Jeremy Pruitt.
Pruitt can coach a damn defense and recruit very well in the Southeast. You really need somebody who knows Texas or Georgia.

I know it sounds provincial, but I've always thought the same thing. Bert was a guy who's entire career was spent in the Big Ten outside of a stint at KSU, and he knew absolutely nothing about the SEC or its dynamics before taking our job. We need someone who either knows the SEC and its dynamics or has roots in the South.
Also, he knew absolutely nothing about our history, and it always rubbed me the wrong way that he came in and acted as if we'd never won anything before and had no history. He basically came in and acted like he was taking the Vandy job.

I thought the same thing. I really thought after the first four games he would have had the team better prepared than Saturdays debacle, but the team flat out quit.

Yea, I tend to agree with you here. His opening presser was like he didn't know anything about Arkansas.
1964 National Champions, 13 Conference Championships, 3 SEC West Titles...
I remember thinking...what is this guy talking about? But giving him the benefit of the doubt because his wife was hot. I understand we have come up short 3 times when attempting to win the SEC, but its not like we haven't won championships at this school.

Yep, exactly.
He almost treated it like he was taking a step down. I liked the hire at the time, but his introductory presser rubbed me the wrong way with the "give you something you've never had before" lines (insert joke about "he has - suckage") and remarks about our program. For comparison sake against Wisconsin, we had/have more national titles, more conference titles, more wins, and more bowl wins, and far more bowl appearances.

Damn dude... WOW! I care what he did after that...
And yes, it was a very extreme example.

this point, I would gladly take Gus. He at least knows what it takes to win in the SEC.
And I say that as someone who hated Gus and still shudders at the thought of CC and Springdale influence.
Please God no. Yes he "knows how to win" but AU is an entirely different animal than UofA. A chunk of the more vocal fanbase would lose their shite at the hire, and another chunk after the first string of losses we were hit with. It just wouldn't be pretty or smart when you can go get someone with waaaaaaaay less, or zero, fan division.
I know theres at least one "big money" man making the push for Gus, but it's supposedly been fought tooth and nail by some of the others which gives me some hope. I just know Long and his propensity for coaches with AR connections.

just goes to show that even very wealthy people can be absolutely stupid at times..

Gus would be here in a heartbeat, but don't see it happening. He'd win here though.

When I look through all the names mentioned, there just aren't many that meet all what I think should be the the requirements..
-Connections to the south
-Proven winner
-Proven ability to revive a program
-Good recruiting record
-Offensive minded with an innovative philosophy
-Would potentially come here
- Under 55, the younger the better

The more you look, Gus just makes the most sense, but some people put their feelings over winning.

Amen. That is a really hard card to check off. Obviously the last is the most important.

What exactly has Gus done at Auburn that makes you think he could win here? He's a loss or two away from being firmly back on the hot seat. Not to mention his offense sucks donkey balls if he doesn't have the perfect QB running it and he's shown no ability to consistently develop those.

Also im not sure people realize that Auburn is historically only a slightly better program than Arkansas. It's not that much different, especially if you exclude Auburn's more recent success (which is largely attributable to Gus). They have a much more fertile recruiting ground but also more competition in the area. Gus is good at using what he has to work with in the most effective way - look at what he did with a converted defensive back at QB.

yeah and they consistently out recruit us by a lot and traditionally have been more talented.

yes every few years when a wb falls in his lap he shines other thsn that his offense is trash. you must have elite talent to run it. which auburn has much more of than us.

Won the national championship as OC.
Won the SEC and made it to the national title game as HC.
That was after taking over a team that went winless in conference play the prior year.
Has 3rd highest winning percentage for an Auburn HC
