I just want a winner
Who that is... I have no idea. Arkansas is at a disadvantage in regards to recruiting, but the right hire can get the job done.
Plus we are an attractive destination for coaches IMO. We aren't asking anybody to win 11 games a year, more like 8/9 wins with occasional 10/11 win seasons.
We poor money into the football program as well. So whomever the coach is, he will have several tools to work with.
Reasonable expectations, a chance to compete in the SEC, and a great community in NWA.

Realistic Possibilities
Jeremy Pruitt: I haven't seen his name mentioned around here. This guy can coach a defense, and he is a proven winner. He was a position coach under Saban, defensive coordinator at FSU when they won the title, went to Georgia and is responsible for half the talent they currently have, and now is back at Bama as the defensive coordinator. He would be my number one choice.
Chad Morris: Proven offensive mind who's offense is still run at Clemson after his departure.
Mike Leach: If he can get his players and bring that defensive coordinator with him, it could be a good hire.

I think we hire a head coach. I also think the PTB want Gus and will do whatever it takes to get him here. That scares me a bit, because I think that hire does indeed split the fanbase. Though winning, would cure all of that quickly.
At this point, I would gladly take Gus. He at least knows what it takes to win in the SEC.
And I say that as someone who hated Gus and still shudders at the thought of CC and Springdale influence.

quote:mike leach career win pct is .607 at Texas tech and Washington state combined. This includes a 3-9 season his first year at wsu. That's who would be at the top of my list but because long is a baby back bitch he probably never even gets a call since he's a little eccentric and not the nicest coach in football.
I just want a winner

Also the auburn fanbase melt would be something to behold.
I believe the majority of them are ready for Gus to go... not much of a melt imho.
ANd please God no... NO!!!
NO!

The more I think about this, the more I like it.
a) I think he'd take the job if offered. That's a big consideration with any opening.
b) He's a defensive guy who has been paired, very successfully, with spread offenses. Hopefully he could field a respectable defense and pair that with a dynamic (spread) offense.
c) He's familiar with the recruiting territory.
d) He's relatively young and brings some fire.
The most glaring issue is that he's never been a head coach anywhere, but I don't see him as any more of a risk than other realistic options.

DO some of you actually hear yourselves, or think before typing the word Gus...
He is Hugh Freeze Jr in so many ways...
From his Floyd disciples, to his whiny, pathetic personality, to his inability to coach up a Qback. He is a system coach. If he cant recruit and coach Auburn to greatness continually, what makes you think he could at Arkansas with historically lesser talent?
and Christy would be with him... NO!!!! NO!!!! NO!!!!

I hope Long steps out of his comfort zone and makes a smart, rather than safe hire. This is the perfect time for a young coach with some fire. We've tried re-tread after re-tread. Give me someone looking to show the college football world what he is capable of.

I'm not from northwest Arkansas so I can't speak on the whole his cult deal and I wouldn't want him as a coach simply because he hasn't proven that he can develop a qb capable of throwing a forward pass at auburn. I do believe he is a lot better coach than some here who seem to have a more emotional tie to him than others, would lead you to believe . I mean the guy has gotten them to the title game, the sugar bowl, and is on track to go to another ny6 bowl this year. Rev I feel like you're probably a really great guy, way better person than I am
but you get caught up on what type of person a guy is too much it seems. There's some real pieces of shite out there who are good at coaching and is rather have them than a nice guy who sucks arse.

Any of you folks in Central AR feel like making a group groveling/begging effort a week from now? The more people there to beg at his feet, the better:

I am in no way, trying to point to myself as the epitome of an example. And I truly do get the gist of "win at all costs" because it appeals to the base of me, but I simply cant and wont live that lifestyle any longer.
I so miss winning Hog Football that it is hard for me to remain in the wheelhouse of "doing things the right way". Believe you me!
Do you remember the kid falling in the end zone hurt.. lol, that gif is bliss. That is Gus as a person. I have been around him a bit and as much as I loathe Nutt, Gus is right there beside him in my estimation. It isn't judgment, it is discernment.

We need a Mofo that is hungry. Someone that eats, sleeps, and breathes football.
For me:
Chad Morris
Scott Frost
PJ Fleck
Interesting tidbit on Frank Wilson
Frank Wilson, UTSA: A charismatic New Orleans native, Wilson, who was a top recruiter at LSU for Les Miles, led the Roadrunners to their first bowl in their debut season. If he can get UTSA to nine wins or more this fall, his name will get very hot. As one SEC administrator pointed out to me a few weeks ago, you know he can recruit well in the SEC-a lot of the other coaches people are putting on lists like this, you have no idea if they can do that.

Well he has had success at Arkansas state. And Tulsa. And come to think of it... Arkansas. It doesn't require much of a leap of faith.

Wouldn't mind Charlie. Ive been impressed with what he has done at USF so far this season. He had no shot at Texas. IMO.

He was completely the wrong fit at Texas. What they wanted was a new Mack Brown. A glad handing smooth talker who would wink and nod at anything going on.

Gary Andersen is out at Oregon St. I'm not advocating for him, but I wonder what Bert thinks of Corvalis. I hear it's nice this time of year.
