Just who in the actual frick is going to play in the 4 LB spots? Wasn't our D-line supposed to be the strength of the team?

I was surprised to hear this. I don't have a problem with the 3-4, but we've been recruiting for a 4-3 and can't execute it properly.

We've been recruiting for the 4-1

On one hand this does make sense since we actually got to line up in a real 4-3 defense maybe twice all year. The rest of the time we were in a nickle or dime package.
That does not seem likely to change this year. The SEC has made the change to a spread offense... whether it be spread option, power spread, or spread passing. An old school 4-3 set up is not built to handle those types of offense.
The problem I see with this is that we got zero pressure on the QB this season with 4 D-linemen on the field. We will have to bring a LB or two and over the last two years we have been the drizzling poo when it comes to disguising a blitz.
Its not the scheme, it is the people calling the plays for the scheme and Smith has been miserable adjusting to spread up tempo teams.
We fielded the worst defense in modern history by most standards this year. The year before that we fielded one of the worst defenses in modern history. Robb Smith might do great somewhere else, but he's shown the last two years he is the wrong guy facing the wrong type of offense at the wrong time.

I don't really have a problem with transitioning to a 3-4 if the coaches feel like we have (or are close to having) the personnel to run it. It's a much better fit for the skillsets of guys like Agim and Ramsey in particular.
The only issue is that it necessitates a solid 0-technique in the middle and good tweener OLBs/DEs, and those guys don't grow on trees.

They're also not indigenous to Arkansas, and it's apparently a federal offense to transport them over state line.

In my opinion the 3-4 morphs a little better to most spread looks..... but the bottom line with Defense today is you have to be multiple... everyone needs to be able to play and even or odd front based on what the offense is giving you. If you look at RS coached defenses you don't see a lot of that. not much creativity or originality. We don't disguise our coverages or blitzes (what few we run). In a 3-4 that will get you killed worse than what happened to us in the 4 front this year.

Yep, it in theory should put more speed on the field.

Good points, if RS is brought back (I hope not) he will need to change many of his tendencies in the 3-4. The 3-4 is so great because you can get creative with it like you said.

What happens in a 3-4 when you need 5 DBs on the field? Does an ILB come out?

You can do a couple of things. The easiest thing would be a 3-3-5. So ya, an inside LB would come out.

I thought Greenlaw has been a good olb. Why wouldn't they find someone else to play in the middle because you always want your most athletic linebackers on the outside

A lot of it as well has to do with the ability to rush the passer. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are the most athletic

It's just a ploy for Bielema to keep Smith around, they are bff's. I hope it works but we need a talent overhaul more than a scheme change.

Maybe we move a couple of our 12 TEs to LB?
Seriously...do something...do anything....just change the defense. I can't watch many more train wrecks like this year.

typical 3-4 nickel package morphs into a 4-2-5 look with a DT coming out and the two OLBs walking up to DE. 3 safety look on the back end in some sort of cover 3 shell.

and again, it's either that or a good excuse for smith to use when he leaves
imo it'll be the excuse used to make multiple assistant changes on the defensive side of the ball...

Try it. It can't be any worse. It's a novelty so it may help in recruiting.
