Agreed, like I said I grade defensive coordinators at Arkansas on a generous curve. Through 26 games I’d give Odom a B- and Briles a B.
I’m not sure Briles is the next Lane Kiffin or Hugh Freeze but his recruiting keeps his head above water. Odom is the opposite. Point is, I’d like to see Odom with a bit more talent. Pittman needs to make that happen.

Let’s say this is Sam Carters fault because he was DB coach and he didn’t recruit anyone. You are the leader over him, you know he isn’t doing his best, let him walk.
Our run defense has been pretty damn good. All the other positions have depth, sort of. And the ones we didn’t full depth issues from high school we did with transfers, let’s do that with secondary.
Thinking Catalon would make it a full season was wishful thinking.

I'd give Briles an A-, our offense is really good
It's not like recruiting has been amazing for the offense either, but it's always easier to have a good offense with lesser talent than it is for the defense.

Tell us about your time as a D1 defensive coordinator. Odom's weak recruiting was known. So maybe Pittman told Odom he would lower the industry standard (per FayetteNAM) 90% of the job being recruiting down to 50%, or maybe even 10%? Who knows? What's an indisputable fact is that some coaches recruit better than others. Until a few years ago, there wasn't a soul on the planet that recruited on Saban's level. Now Kirby Smart is there, Dabo has been there a little more hit and miss. But if you really think it's 90% of the job, I present to you Jimbo Fisher.

Odom has never recruited. His knock at Missouri. So he's not going to start here.
And news flash, this is Arkansas. 9 to 10 wins IS as good as it gets here.

I’d give Briles a B+ on no curve…
Remove his sweeps and dumb plays of the sort he could be one of the better ones we’ve had.

Hell going back to Jimmy Johnson he said Jimmy and Joes beat X and O… Bear Bryant knew he needed to offer everyone to keep good players from others, while we can’t do that anymore. Maybe don’t ignore all of recruiting.
No team has won a national title without a top 5 recruiting class. Except Clemson, who did it twice, with generational Quarterbacks. And they had multiple top 10 classes.

Honestly the sweeps he's called this year have been decently effective. He hasn't called hardly any of his normal cutesy bullshite

I get annoyed with Briles as much as anybody but I haven’t hated much of anything he’s called this year.

I watched the replay and Arkansas missed a lot of tackles. Either they overpursue and whiff or they hand tackle up high and let them break free for extra yards.

I see Odom take heat here as well. I believe people just give Odom a little bit more of a pass because the defense had less to work with overall when he took over IMO. I also think that Pittman having a major influence on the Oline greatly helps Briles as well.

This isn’t even a bad game other than our pass D. We had 3 turnovers that all lead to points, if I remember correctly. Two we would have scored on. So that’s a 14 point us to 17 point them. Then we scored 3 times in under a minute of game play. 2 for 85 yards 16 seconds 3 for 76 yards and 26 seconds and a punt return. This could have been a blow out had we not had turnovers. But our pass defense would still be hot garbage.

It varies depending on the location. If you create good enough schemes and can develop, you can get away with being a subpar recruiter.
