That assumes that there is one national discourse decided on by a group of people. Sure, media owners and high ups can push stories to the front, but usually it comes from what's hot at the moment.

Add in live TV's immediacy, you're going to get more stories about crime, and that's easy to report. Who, what, when, where and why.

If there's a lack of economic reporting on the front page, it's because it's a nuanced problem with lots of small parts and the main players aren't playing much in public. The firearms debate isn't a ploy to direct attention, it's just the current hot button issue that gets visceral responses. This thread should be an indication of that.

ie - The masses lack the sophistication to follow complex issues requiring complex solutions. Although the economy can be, and often is, oversimplified just like the firearms debate.

Truer words were never spoken.

It's amusing while sad at the same time hearing people parroting their extremely negative opinion about Obamacare when most couldn't tell you the first thing about it. I don't expect anybody to fully understand it as hardly anyone does, but I'm talking about most people don't know anything at all about it. And what they think they know is completely wrong.

They just know that it takes away their freedom. They don't know why or how they've just been told that it does. Usually the same group of people that also say this is a Christian nation and everybody s/b Christians if they want to live here and who also want to empower the Federal Government to take over control of a woman's body because the Government is in a better position to make those decisions instead of the individual. Real conservative position there, having government take control of people's bodies.

No breach of freedom there, just don't take my 30 round clip or make me be responsible for paying a $200 a year tax to have access to free emergency room care. Now that would be the government taking away my freedom, damn liberals, shite.

The "Wyoming measure" would be unconstitutional under the Supremecy Clause. The 10th Amendment doesn't give state's the ability to decide which federal laws will apply. But, at least it wouldn't result in a huge waste of taxpayer money defending it in courts like all the stupid stuff that apparently Oklahoma is doing.

If federal law made owning an assault weapon illegal, the federal government could enforce that law and prosecute it through the federal courts. The "Wyoming measure" is just a ploy to get votes from people who don't know any better.
