What is a GMs responsibility?

Can a GM offer a player a coach doesn't want?

Does the GM change with the coach?

Who does a GM report to?

Can a GM fire the head coach?

I've seen a lot of supposition a GM will make you everything better but what is our GMs role going to be? What difference will it make?

Think it’s going to end up being a director of recruiting but for the portal. Will have scouts working under them.

The coach will say I need two tight ends and the GM will find them in the portal. And basically make everyone satisfied on the money front, so we don’t have 25 in the portal of our own.

If its just a director of recruiting were in trouble. And Id argue it makes no difference.

How will they keep them happy on the money front? Are they gonna fundraise?

Ever follow Nakos? I believe he was the portal master for a school, before he portal master for on3. You basically know who is unhappy at every school, and how much it would take to make them happy at your school. You break down every piece of video on each player. You know about each offensive tackle, and have a list you want and if one hits the portal you are on them before the coach knows they are there.

They are who family members send feelers out to..

No one wants to meet with a GM. They want the pictures with the coach. The only other person would have to have been a Frank Broyles famous.

So we're gonna hire a good extra recruiting coordinator for portal specific? I see how that helps but don't see it making a dramatic difference....Assuming Sam still has final say in recruits or does the GM?

The AD is more removed from a team than a GM is in professional sports. AD is almost an owners rep across teams.

GM would own the actual hiring and firing of coaches and players. The success of the program would be dependent on them and they would answer to the owner. Billy beane in money ball was a GM as an example. The AD has some of those responsibilities but not all typically the HC determined players he wanted and staff below himself as well.

Cal acts like the GM for his team.

The role of the GM would be for NIL negotiations between the school and the player, manage the budget, drive fund raising for NIL, manage negotiations of legit NIL, basically the money side of things.

The staff would still be responsible for evaluating talent and recruiting. This is the job of scouts on the pro levels.

The GM can be the bad guy when it comes to the money and the coach is removed from this where we all know money can change the dynamic of relationships.

The smart schools will treat it like money ball assigning budgets and amounts by position, the NFL salaries set a good baseline of where the money should be going with less value at the QB and skill positions due to a larger supply at the college level that can compete on the college level compared to the NFL.

Right now schools like Ole Miss are spending like drunken sailors with not direction of the spending other than they can and will remain at or slightly above where they were prior to NIL. The blue bloods are doing the same because they can, a smart ad will game the system like Boise was in the BCS, but we don't have a smart ad.

This is more what I would like to see out of a GM vs a recruiting coordinator. With a GM do we need a more involved coach vs a CEO coach? It seems redundant with a CEO coach in place. Where we need someone who can implement the best systems and get the most out of the players that get identified by scouts

A GM would just remove the money part of the coaches and staff putting their roles back to what they were pre NIL.

They staff identifies who they want from the portal or in recruiting and the GM and staff handles the money. They coach doesn't need to know who's being paid what, its like the SWC back in the 80s.

I do not get why people care about this

It's like caring about the trainer or the bus driver

I think the idea of having a GM is for them to be the “boss” of the football program.

Arkansas football is now its own organization, so a college GM and a pro teams GM are essentially the same thing. The GM’s responsible for all day to day operations, coaches, players, and scouts.

This person would do the hiring and firing of coaches. Would be the last word on players being told to leave, and also signing players. He’d be in charge of all player and coaches contract negotiations.

In pro sports, the GM’s only directly report to the owner. In college, GM’s should report only to the BOT.

It’s why OU just hired a major corporation CEO to run its football program. Alabama did it a bit different and let DeBoer(sp) bring his own GM in. My opinion is the GM needs to have not personal ties to the head coach and should be hired by the BOT and should have the final word in the football program, above the AD.

With revenue sharing about to start, millions being paid to players, football programs need to separate themselves from the rest of the athletic department.

It should be cared about. The amount of money soon to be available to players will be crazy with revenue sharing beginning.

The GM will be the most important cog in football programs. Just as it is in pro sports.

I hope so. Have we heard any potential job responsibilities from the school yet outside of portal money man for this role yet?

We could in theory promote Sam to GM since he's a CEO head coach now. And then we hire an actual football coach to coach up players and lead cohesive game planning
