"In an open letter to "States Considering Imposing Discrimination Laws," the CEO of the recommendations service Yelp pledged to avoid adding or maintaining jobs in states that impose measures like Rep. Bob Ballinger's bill to allow discrimination on "religious" grounds. Yelp has annual revenues of $380 million and a market cap of $3.4 billion."

"Earlier today, just after Gov. Asa Hutchinson introduced the state's new economic development chief, the Human Rights Campaign announced its plans to run an ad in Silicon Valley's largest newspaper announcing that Arkansas is closed for business because of discrimination.

The bill has been opposed by Wal-Mart, Apple, and the Arkansas Municipal League for weeks. Yesterday, following the enactment of a similar bill in Indiana, a wave of high-tech companies like Yelp and Salesforce—precisely the kinds of investment Governor Hutchinson has said he hopes to attract to the state—have condemned this kind of legislation."

Arkansas spoiled me as a kid. We were national champions in basketball had a fantastic politician as leader of the United States.

Now my only expectation is for the Arkansas legislature to continually embarrass this state on a local and national stage, and not only have they not disappointed but they have done so in a way I couldn't even fathom previously.

Shine on you ignorant diamonds.

And this just in...

quote:

The Senate Education committee passed a bill today by Sen. Linda Collins-Smith (R-Pocahontas) that would require non-AP high school and junior high U.S. social studies classes to teach at least four weeks of history concerning "the period of colonization through 1890," regardless of what the rest of the class is about.

quote:

An average Arkansas school year is 178 days long, which means over 10 percent of school days in such classes would be occupied by teaching material outside the scope of the class. Uncodified language at the beginning of the bill explains that "the critical early years of United States history" are usually only taught in grade 6. In committee, proponents of the bill said that its passage would help ensure "freedom." Officials from the Arkansas Department of Education testified against the bill, saying that it was a bad idea to force civics classes to teach history. Their advice was not heeded.

I don't see much of an issue other than it being a somewhat waste of time. So they have to go through the Revolutionary War and the growth of the colonies again. So what? I may be biased because that was by far my favorite portion of History classes in school, but I don't see the need to make a mountain out of a mole hill here. Their reasoning for doing it is stupid, but it's not like they aren't getting taught something.

I think this is the issue. My JR/HS had entire classes dedicated to US history, where this would be appropriate. But the way I interpret this is the World History or Civics classes would also have to teach 4 weeks of US colonial history.

These morons are anything but "conservatives", by definition a conservative wouldn't consider implementing a tax on the number of miles a person drives.

This legislature is the direct result of term limits and the fact that most legislators are now non-lawyers who have no concept of or interest in what is and is not constitutional. Term limits were a good thing at the time in that it got rid of a "good old boy" network that bordered on, if it didn't actually engage in, corruption. However, the downside has been the election of absolute morons with radical notions of how society should act and no hesitation in coming up with non-sensical legislation to impose their radical beliefs.

when I was in shcool

7th grade - social studies
8th grade - US history
9th grade - civics
10th grade - AP US history
11th grade - AP Art history
12th grade - AP Philosophy
[

if they are saying EVERY year you have to do it, that's fricked up. But if it just has to be done one time it would be done in 8th and again in 10th grade
