Name the negatives? He’s a big name, has big game experience, has a ton of “i coached X in the NFL” for defensive assitants to pitch... I’m not seeing a huge downside other than it’s not Venables.

Talent is the biggest weakness right now. He doesn’t recruit for shite. I’d say that’s a pretty big negative

Let's hope this is just another case of Arkansas media. Chavis is not what I expected, or wanted. We must have the money to do better.
That said, I can't remember a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 4 by Tennessee, LSU, or aTm, so he's probably an improvement, sadly.

Coordinators not being big recruiters has never been an issue for me. Your position guys are the ones that have to be recruiters.

Can we have some names of people who are better?

Coordinators don't bring in big name talent...Head Coaches do

Ahhh the he doesn’t recruit reasoning. Name a DC we’ve ever had that was a knockout recruiter. I get that he isn’t your first choice but your reasoning so far is bitching to bitch.

Name a time when Arkansas has had a defense worth a shite outside of a random year here or there.
When has Chavis done shite when he didn’t have elite DL talent. Everywhere he’s been he’s had top 10 talent on the DL.

If you choose to look at the effectiveness of putting players into the league instead of recruiting to gauge this hire...
There have been 72+ John Chavis coached players selected in the NFL draft over the last 26 years. That's almost THREE a year. Think about that.

Other than the obvious?
Is there a recruiter among the DC's at Fresno State, Troy, San Diego State, or Southern Miss?
If so, then him. We need our coaches to recruit. All of them. Especially on that side of the ball.

He doesn't have to be. Needs to be someone that can build an SEC caliber defense. Chavis can definitely do that.

Take a guy from Troy or San Diego State over a guy with over two decades of successful SEC experience? You sure?

I'm no head coach, but if any of those had a hand in getting the defense they coached to school, then yes. Chavis has had a constant stream of blue chip defensive recruits fed to him since his days at Tennessee. Probably second only to Alabama. That will not happen here.

I know Chavis has some good experience and can point to plenty of players in the NFL, but what percentage of those were out of LSU where the D talent is fertile?
IMHO our defense needs a younger guy with fire that's here to kick arse and take names in the name of Arkansas football, not a retread that's on the down-swing and just taking the job for a paycheck. You think Chavis is legitimately invested in seeing UofA become successful more than he's legitimately invested in earning a paycheck and having a job?
ETA - I should add that I NEVER thought Venables would be our DC and am not comparing this hire to that in any way.

Is it too late to hire Robb smith or Willy Robinson?
Posted on 12/11/17 at 2:42 pm to RazorBroncs
Chavis couldn't get it done half the time with elite talent, can't imagine he'll thrive here.

We just need to get a name on the board because we are in full tilt booger mode and we caaaaaaaaiiin't stop and we wooooooon't stop

I am good with chavis. Name alone will being in some cruits. Look..with a quick strike offense it is a depth game. Easier schematically and have rested defense. Just make sure the line is solid and corners.

Here is a blurb from an sbnation write-up last year
This past year they ranked 66
So 87 and 63 before chavis then 27, 36, 66, but I do think they lost a good bit of talent after last year
quote:
Thus far, John Chavis’ tenure as A&M defensive coordinator has been fine. After two years in the wilderness — the Aggies ranked 87th in Def. S&P+ in 2013 and 63rd in 2014 — Chavis came to town and restored some semblance of stability. A&M ranked 27th in 2015 and 36th last fall. Not good enough considering the recruiting rankings, but it’s something.
