That's not true. The football program lost a few scholarships for a couple of years stemming from the Herrod situation and years of players being paid no show jobs during the summer. He used the leverage of the Nebraska job for the 2 year pass because he knew his lazy recruiting was about to catch up to him.

Overview
Yes, the NCAA investigation and resulting probation significantly hurt the Arkansas football program under Houston Nutt, primarily by damaging recruiting efforts and creating a "cloud" of uncertainty.
U
Impact on recruiting
Negative recruiting: During the multi-year investigation, rival schools used the pending NCAA action as a weapon in recruiting, telling prospective players that Arkansas could face severe sanctions like a bowl or TV ban. In 2003, before the official penalties were announced,

Prolonged uncertainty: The case dragged on for three years after Arkansas self-reported violations in 2000, creating long-term instability that affected recruiting.

Probation and penalties: The overall athletic program was placed on three years of probation, and a repeat-violator clause was put in place. While Arkansas avoided a ban on postseason play and television appearances, the limitations on recruiting assets were a blow to the program.

People sure do hate Nutt enough to stretch the truth.

Exactly, just like Pittman brought us an elite O-line.

True but Kirby DC seem to be doing good.

His offensive side do not.
He hasn’t learned to get modern there unlike Saban. Still running the early Saban offenses.

Must call first, but would never happen

1) Urban Meyer
2) Curt Cignetti

Next Tier, would still have to pony up the money

3) Dan Mullen
4) Rhett Lashlee
5) Barry Odom (Would involve retaining Petrino in my mind)
6) Jon Sumrall

One of those 6 names could, should, and will be the next head coach.

I wish he was 10 years younger. We need a chip on your shoulder piss and vinegar type coach.

What they did to Fat Burt today was a thing of beauty.

Fran Brown is another one who will be looking for a step up if Syracuse has another good year.

Didn't this guy just fail to produce a winning product in this same league a short time ago? Why on earth would we give him the reins?

Because he would say yes and would want to be here.

That would check all the boxes for Hunter.

I would also say yes and want to be there if that’s all the requirements needed hell I’d even settle for just a cool mill.

Hunter would want to show he's serious about being competitive, so you would have to be in the top 10 salary wise, a million just won't do.

And to prove winning matters, after your first few seasons are not taken into account to allow culture and recruiting change, you need to finish below .500 with noncon included to have the buyout of 75% of your contract, if over .500 and fired you would be entitled to 100% of the remainder of your contract.

With these terms it's amazing he was able to hire anyone to take the job, tough.

Brian Hartline is my number 1 choice.

He’s going to be a big time coach when he gets a shot.

I really like Kenny Dillingham as well.

He isn’t going anywhere that’s not Ohio.
