All the talk of Chad's new offense, but we have a lot of talent returning on defense.

Scoota
Kevin Richardson
Ryan Pulley
Santos Ramirez
Kam Curl
Sosa
Chevin Calloway
Dre Greenlaw
Grant Morgan

just to name a few. If the offense takes some time to gel maybe the defense can make up for it. We're pretty stacked and have a much better defensive coordinator now. Rhoads was in way over his head.

Won't be hard to be an improvement.

Other fans laugh about #3rdandChavis.... I'd be happy to get a team to 3rd down.

some folks will crap on this thought, but I agree. Getting to 3rd down with the drops, stunted runs, etc will be a massive improvement from the past few years.

I really do think the D will be so improved.

I was always perplexed by Rhoads getting such a pass on the defense. I think it was because the fans were to the point of blaming Bielema for everything. It was a strange phenomenon where fans would acknowledge that we had the worst defense in America, but they still liked Rhoads and respected him.

Probably because when he was DBs coach, he had them playing the only respectable football on the field. Good first impressions mean a lot.

Hot take.

Certainly we will rush and pressure the opponents QB for the first time in two-three years.

Nice troll.

Bielema was the passive one, do not rushing the passer but preaching a strategy of bulking DL to take on blockers at the line of scrimmage, 10 yard cushions on 3rd/4th and short, defense played one arm behind back continuously giving up the big play without taking chances to force turnovers, be aggressive or attacking. He was scared to be confident in his players and putting those players in positions to make plays for fear of them screwing up. Always thought of what could go wrong rather than making plays to out games away and score points.

Classic case of the Peter Principle. Good position coach but couldn't call a game to save his life.

You're proving my point. Rhoads was the defensive coordinator for the worst defense we've ever had. It's ok to blame him.

Well...let's just say if we're not better then all hope is lost. We've truly been terrible defensively the last few years. The change was long overdue.

As to our returning players, well...they were part of those lousy defenses, so I'm hoping for better schemes and techniques along with some improving young talent to push them. I do feel encouraged seeing the recruiting activity along the dline especially.

If I had to make a guess we'll have a few bad games on defense this year, more having to do with depth issues then our starters. We can't afford a run of injuries.

That having been said I think we will be quite a bit better then we have been in recent years. A modest improvement would seem like the love child of the '85 Bears and the Pittsburgh Steel Curtain defenses after what we've been through. I like our defense to keep us around in a couple of games this year and give us a shot to win late.

The D will be better with the eye test but not in the statistical category.

I don't think our offense will be good enough to field a good D. We are going to hit stagnant patches and our D will pay for it. We will wear down at the end of games if we don't score.

I feel like the offense will struggle mightily.

I think they may some games but I also think we have the talent advantage or at least a push talent wise in half our games and hopefully Chad will be able to manufacture points since new suppose to be an offensive guy

Honestly I said this team was the one we were building towards before last year.

We have 2 LBs who should be drafted. We have a CB who is a true lock down corner. We have a safety in Santos who is probably a late round pick. Cam kurl has the talent to be drafted in a few years. Agim will be drafted also. There is a NFL player at every level of this defense.

Go ahead and look at the 2 deep. If we had not lost Rodgers both sides of the LOS would be nothing but RS JR's and Srs. Which is the type of team structure arkansas needs to be successful. We just have no depth. Hopefully we can make enough noise this year to get a good class, and build something with it.

I think we have decent depth at receiver and potentially running back but I could be wrong definitely very little depth on defense though I agree.

Do you not remember the year before and 56-3? Our defense was awful long before Rhoads took over.

I’d definitely feel optimistic about this year if we had a QB since it is an upperclassmen heavy team with so many returning starters. However, I worry we’re going to burn this opportunity to have a HDN first year jump becaue we have no one at QB right now to run this offense.
