FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas defensive coordinator John Chavis has exercised a voluntary two-year employment extension that will keep him under contract with the Razorbacks through the 2020 season.

Chavis, 62, was under contract through February 2019 and had the option to extend his employment by two seasons if he requested it in writing prior to Dec. 1.

According to a contract that Chavis signed in January, his salary will increase from $995,000 annually to $1.5 million beginning March 1, 2019.

Chavis will receive another pay raise to $1.6 million on March 1, 2020. He is the first Arkansas assistant in any sport to make more than $1 million per year.

Biggest commitment of the 2019 recruiting class in my opinion.

He must believe they are building a solid defense for sure.

I'm happy he signed his extension, but this isn't necessarily what this means. He is aging, and I don't think he could have gone anywhere else that would be considered better job.

I guarantee you if he thought we were gonna be 2-10 again he wouldve bailed even if it means he sat out a year or retired

I hope so too and I’d think he wouldn’t want that to be how he ended his career.

But we also gave him 1.5M reasons to stay this year and 1.6M to stay the next...

He's about to get $1.5 million, there's not a school in the country that would pay him that much.

Not to be a pessimist, but for $1.5 million a year I'd be whistling zippy do da out my butthole whether the team went 10-2 or 2-10. Chavis isn't going to walk away from that unless someone dangles an even bigger paycheck in front of him.

Did anyone else watch Morris' end of year presser like I did yesterday? The one thing that stuck with me was the lack of any discernible enthusiasm by Morris when talking about Chavis extending.

No we're excited about it, nothing. Completely deadpanned the entire subject. To be fair, a lot of the PC was this, but damn. I would have thought he would have said he was glad his DC decided to stay. The only half-assed positive he could muster was mentioning "continuity" a few times.

I took it more as it was expected so he wasn't going to have a big reaction to it. Like something he knew was going to happen weeks ago. Thats just me though

Maybe so. I haven’t learned to read Morris that well yet. Seems like he has rightfully gotten angry about the results and progress this season, but has also allowed it to destroy his enthusiasm.
