I don't like the look of "yeah, come on in guys" and then the very next off-season "time for you to go". If we were upfront with them, then great, but otherwise, it's going to be used against us in the near future.

At this point he has no reason not to be. We expect success and excellent play. You have to earn everything you get and will be replaced if you don't produce. It's the Nick Saban formula.

Muss is literally clearing out everyone who didn't play last year.
After last offseason this doesn't shock me that much. People tended to say that Muss likes playing with a small rotation but I don't think that's actually true. I felt like that was something that came out of necessity rather than preference. I think he'd play more guys if he had the depth. Looks like he's going after that this year.

Like it is at Alabama. A school that wins can pull stuff like this. Schools like Vandy can’t.

This article is from before the Mitchell twins and Graham news so it's a bit dated but Muss looks to build a new roster like NBA free agency every offseason.

Eric Musselman on new transfer rules: It's a game-changer

quote:

Ever since Eric Musselman moved to Arkansas in 2019, he’s taken advantage of the NCAA transfer portal. Over the last three seasons, he brought in more new players via transfer than through the high school ranks. When the NCAA granted all student-athletes a one-time, penalty-free transfer, Musselman was already one of the best coaches in the country at finding pieces from other schools to bring in – and ways to fit them all together. He believes the new rules are a “game-changer.”

“I think that it’s kind of been a game-changer,” Musselman said of the NCAA’s new rules. “There’s been a lot of coaching changes, and as my wife and I were talking, it’s much like the NBA now. As a coach, because of the ability to change your roster quickly, obviously, in the NBA, it’s free agency, and then you might have a draft pick or two.

“Well, college basketball has turned into a little bit where a lot of programs are only taking one or two freshmen, much like a first-rounder and a second-rounder. And then they’re filling in with free agents, whether it be a transfer who is a second-year player or maybe a grad transfer. I think it’s leveled the playing field.”

Musselman and staff begin offseason roster turnover

quote:

The head hog and his staff work extensively with analytics to find players who could fit in at Arkansas. They contact players from the top-25 level teams to the Big Sky conference. With stars and unknowns, the Hogs came up with teams that have made it to back-to-back Elite Eights.

Arkansas guard JD Notae joined the Razorbacks in the 2020-21 season from Jacksonville University. He turned into the team’s leading scorer and a first-team All-SEC selection.

Not every transfer story is a success like Notae, but enough have been for Musselman and the Hogs. With the departures of three seniors, three more NBA hopefuls and three transfers, the Razorbacks have room for five top-200 additions in the 2022 class and at least three new transfer additions.

Former Missouri forward Trevon Brazile announced his transfer to Arkansas last week. He averaged 6.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 21.5 minutes per game as a freshman in 2021-22. Brazile arrived at Mizzou as an unranked prospect, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. He’s 6-foot-9, 215 pounds, and gives Arkansas a much-needed big following Jaylin Williams‘ departure for the NBA Draft.

I know there’s less optimism than ever about Jaylin returning, but man after watching Graham’s highlights I feel like they would pair super well together on the court.

Seems like I remember him talking about guys coming in and competing for playing time, that he doesn't promise anything and they have to earn it.

Had a lot of guys this year who couldn't log any minutes and when they did they immediately stunk it up. That sucked for 2 reasons. #1 it impacted our depth. #2 steel sharpens steel. This new roster may only last a year but these guys are gonna be tough as nails after going against each other in practice day in and day out.

And, if we are deep enough to make another tournament run and get 3-5 more of these kids drafted, guess what? He's gonna have even better players lining up next season to try and win a title and make the NBA

I think this is where we are at this point:

Derrian Ford – 6’3 190 – guard – Magnolia High School

Devonte Davis – 6’4 180 – guard – Jacksonville High School - NBA 3rd round projection 2024

Nick Smith – 6’4, 175 – point guard – NLR High – NBA high 1st round lock 2023

Jaxon Robinson – 6’6 185 – guard – Texas A&M – gone?

Joseph Pinion – 6’6 185 – forward – Morrilton High School

Barry Dunning – 6’6 190 – forward – Mobile

Anthony Black – 6’7 190 – point guard – Duncanville – NBA high 1st round lock 2023

Jordan Walsh – 6’7 195 – forward – Branson – NBA high 1st round lock 2023

Kamani Johnson – 6’7 235 – forward – UALR – gone?

Trevon Brazille – 6’9 215 – small forward – Mizzou – NBA 2nd round projection for 2024

Makhi Mitchell – 6’9 225 – center – Rhode Island

Makhel Mitchell – 6’9 230 – center – Rhode Island

Jalen Graham – 6’9 205 – center – Arizona State

Jaylin Williams – 6’10 240 – forward – Fort Smith Northside HS – possible NBA 1st round projection THIS YEAR - Jaylin! Come back! Jaylin come back!

That’s 14

Gone to the Arkansas Razorbacks Hall of Honor – Stanley Umude, JD Notae, Trey Wade, Au’Diese Toney, Chris Lykes

Thank you for your service and God bless – KK Robinson, Chance Moore, Conner Vanover

Walk-ons – Cade Arbogast and Lawson Blake (Allowed as practice players? Able to dress a game if someone is hurt?)

a note about the famed "Fab Five" of Michigan...

two of them were never that great - Jimmy King played in the NBA for part of two seasons, then in lower class pro leagues, and Ray Jackson topped out with 6 seasons in the CBA.

If Jaylin comes back, we have a chance to have 4 first round draft picks on the floor at the same time, along with Devonte and Brazille

that is exciting as hell

If J. Will comes back it has to be Kamani. Robinson will get minutes just from the fact we don't have enough guards. Kamani has no place on next years team with all the bigs we picked up.

We have guards but not really any 3 pt specialists so he could maybe find a niche role

Musselman heavily recruited Robinson out of high school and added him after an underwhelming freshman season at A&M. I don’t think he’s regretting it or surprised at his lack of immediate production. Also, I can’t think of any transfers that Muss has shown the door after one season. He might not want that reputation.
