139 Colin Fisher Noble HS (OK) USA P L/L HS SR
6' 3" 210lbs
DOB:09/21/04

After spending limited time on the showcase circuit last summer, Fisher has popped up as a possible top-three-rounds prospect this spring. A three-sport athlete, he accounted for 36 touchdowns as a quarterback last fall, but his future is on the mound. Fisher has added about 2-3 mph of fastball velocity as a senior, operating at 88-93 mph with some arm-side run, and should gain some more as he fills out his 6-foot-3 frame. His best offering is an upper-70s curveball with good depth, and he can land it for strikes or use it to get chases out of the zone. He doesn't employ his changeup often, but his low-80s cambio features some sink. Fisher is a good athlete with a quick arm. There are some mixed reviews on his delivery, though he does throw strikes and shows the ability to command his curveball. He also offers some power as a lefty-hitting first baseman, though he'll focus on pitching at the next level, either in pro ball or in college at Arkansas.

141 Hunter Dietz Calvary Christian HS (FL) USA P R/L HS SR
6' 6" 225lbs
DOB:03/03/05

One of the three big starters at Calvary Christian High School in Florida, Dietz looked like he might be the No. 2 guy on that stacked prep rotation. A big lefty, Dietz has transformed his body, and his effectiveness on the mound had improved as a result. After a solid tour of summer showcase events, he hasn't taken the step forward as one of the best high school southpaws in the class many hoped to see this spring. Dietz still offers an intriguing combination of size at 6-foot-6, stuff and feel for pitching. The lefty throws his fastball typically in the low-90s and there's hope that continued improvement with his condition that led to a better delivery over the summer will create more consistent velocity in the future, though scouts noted his arm speed hasn't been as impressive this spring as it was last summer. His hard and short low-80s slider misses bats and could be an out pitch in the future. He has some feel for a changeup -- although he hasn't used it much, there's belief it will develop into at least an average offering. Despite his size, Dietz does an excellent job repeating his delivery and arm slot, showing an ability to use both sides of the plate and throw all of his pitches for strikes. The Arkansas recruit reminds some of a high school version of Oklahoma's College World Series standout Jake Bennett, who was a second rounder in the 2022 Draft.

Drafted 20th, #588 - Did not sign
159 Gabe Gaeckle Aptos HS (CA) USA P R/R HS SR
5' 11" 185lbs
DOB:09/28/04

Aptos High School in Northern California has had five players drafted but none since 2008. That year right-hander Kevin Eichhorn went in the third round, though he never reached the big leagues. Gaeckle, who jumped out on the summer showcase circuit at events like the Area Code Games, has the chance to break his school's dry streak in the Draft this July. A bit undersized at 5-foot-11, Gaeckle is a strong and athletic right-hander with some interesting pitch ingredients. His fastball has averaged around 92 mph this spring, up to 95, and he was up a tick or two higher over the summer. He has a live arm, and while the fastball tends to have a true plane, there's a little hop to it. His hard curve, averaging around 76 mph, is his best pitch, and it could be plus, with high spin rates and a lot of depth. He started mixing in a mid-80s slider that could be effective, but it's further away, and while he doesn't throw it a ton, he has shown the ability to sell his changeup with arm speed, though it lacks consistent shape. Gaeckle tends to be around the strike zone and with his athleticism, he should have solid command in the future. The biggest question teams might have when deciding whether to try to sign him away from his Arkansas commitment is that he had Tommy John surgery when he was 15 years old.

183 Tate McGuire Liberty North HS (MO) USA P R/R HS SR
6' 4" 205lbs
DOB:08/09/04

For the second straight spring, Liberty North won the Missouri Class 6 state high school championship behind an athletic right-hander who drew the attention of scouts. Following in the footsteps of Marlins 2022 third-rounder Karson Milbrandt, McGuire allowed just two earned runs in 59 2/3 innings and spun a 19-strikeout one-hitter with no walks in mid-May. Gatorade's Missouri state player of the year, he won't go as high as Milbrandt, but he could factor into the first five rounds if he's signable away from Arkansas. As with most prepsters, the quality of McGuire's fastball can fluctuate as he continues to mature physically. His heater can be explosive at its best, reaching 96 mph with carry and armside run, and he could operate in the mid-90s as he gets stronger. He has good feel for a changeup with fade and is making progress with a slider that parks around 80 mph, both of which could become solid offerings. A two-way player and three-sport participant in high school, McGuire is a good athlete who repeats his mechanics and throws strikes. He does tend to fly open with his delivery, something he'll have to address to prevent hitters from getting a good look at his pitches. If everything comes together, he could blossom into a mid-rotation starter.

205 Ryder Helfrick Clayton Valley HS (CA) USA C R/R HS SR

DOB:02/17/05

Over the summer, Helfrick put his name on the map as an intriguing high school catching prospect, particularly after he won MVP honors at the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Chase Field in Phoenix. But while he has all the raw tools you want from the position, he's struggled to replicate that performance this spring, leading some to think he's likely headed to college. A right-handed hitter, Helfrick does have tremendous bat speed that can lead to impacting the baseball, like he did with his triple in the All-American Classic. But his swing gets disconnected and he doesn't sync up his lower half. It's power-over-hit now and he hasn't shown good plate coverage, especially this spring, with a bit of a one-dimensional approach. Helfrick does run well, especially for a catcher, and that athleticism should help him become a better receiver. He has plenty of raw arm strength, but he needs to clean up his throwing mechanics to improve his accuracy to second base, something that should come with more instruction. It is an intriguing set of tools at a premium position that lacks depth in this Draft class, but it might be tough for teams to sign him away from his commitment to Arkansas.

Ten years ago, a pair of Hawaiian high school infielders were taken in the fourth round of the Draft. Both Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Kean Wong have at least touched the big leagues, with Kiner-Falefa having much more success. There hasn't been a prep position player from the Aloha State to make it to the big leagues since, but many feel Souza has a chance to do so. At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Souza has the kind of strong and athletic frame scouts covet. He's a left-handed hitter who has shown the ability to drive the ball to all fields at times, but he's more power-over-hit right now with some swing-and-miss concerns. He should be able to tap into more pop as he fills out his projectable frame and has shown a solid approach with bat speed at times, leading some to believe he'll hit enough at the next level. Souza has played shortstop in high school and he doesn't have bad actions on the dirt, with the chance to be a capable defender with some work in the future. He likely won't stick long term at the premium position and has seen time at other spots. Some see third as a good fit with his power profile and others believe second base is his best long-term home. Regardless of the position, it's the frame and the offensive potential teams might be looking at if they want to entertain trying to sign him away from his Arkansas commitment.

Former Georgia OF Justin Thomas commits to Arkansas

quote:

Arkansas baseball head coach Dave Van Horn and the Diamond Hogs picked up a 2025 commitment from a junior college transfer on Friday, this time from former Georgia Bulldog outfielder Justin Thomas.

The Savannah, Georgia, native slashed .103/.350/.241 with an OPS of .591 as a freshman for the Bulldogs in 2023. He totaled three hits, one double, one home run, five RBIs, seven walks and 15 strikeouts in 40 plate appearances.

Out of 25 games played and eight starts (4-CF, 4-RF), Thomas fielded a perfect 1.000 with 22 putouts and one assist in 23 total chances.

Named the 2022 Savannah Morning News Baseball Player of the Year after batting .517 and hitting a Benedictine Military High School record 16 home runs, Thomas was a teammate of current Vanderbilt left-handed pitcher Carter Holton with the Cadets. Perfect Game ranked Thomas as the 301st overall player and 55th rated outfielder in the country out of high school.

Arkansas is already loaded in the outfield this season after another stellar transfer portal class, so the need for Thomas this season isn’t exactly pressing.

Thomas is attending Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers, Florida, for the upcoming baseball season with plans to join the Razorbacks in 2024.

Does the name of the X/Twitter account above sound familiar? It should, as Cullen Smith was an infielder for the Hogs during their 50-13 overall 2021 season in which they won the SEC and SEC Tournament. He also served as a student assistant under Van Horn for the 2022-23 seasons.

Now an assistant baseball coach for the Buccaneers, Smith will get a year to help develop Thomas before he makes his way to Fayetteville.

IMO he's a 2024 commitment not 2025 as the story says because he'll JUCO this year and come in next summer before fall ball.

Head coach Dave Van Horn and the Razorbacks announced today their 2024 signing class, inking 17 high school standouts and two junior college products to National Letters of Intent.

Arkansas’ 2024 signing class is No. 18 in Perfect Game’s recruiting rankings, the ninth consecutive year that Van Horn, assisted by Nate Thompson, Matt Hobbs and Bobby Wernes, has brought in a top-20 class in Perfect Game’s rankings.

“Congratulations to this year’s signing class,” Van Horn said. “Coach Thompson, Coach Hobbs and Coach Wernes worked around the clock to identify guys who fit our program, desire to get better, want to develop and love to work extremely hard. We believe the future is bright for this group, and we’re excited to get them here to Baum-Walker Stadium.”

Arkansas’ 19-man signing class features 10 pitchers, including eight right-handers and two left-handers, as well as nine position players, including four outfielders, three infielders and a pair of catchers. This year’s group of Razorback signees hail from two countries – United States (18) and Australia (1) – and represent eight different states – Arkansas (7), California (2), Georgia (1), Kansas (1), Missouri (1), Nebraska (1), Oklahoma (2) and Texas (3).

“We’re excited to welcome each new member of the 2024 signing class to the Razorback family,” Thompson, Arkansas’ recruiting coordinator, said. “As a staff, we’re thrilled about these young men choosing to make Baum-Walker Stadium their home. Filled with upside, this is a group of performers that’s hungry to make an impact upon arrival in Fayetteville.

“They’re hardworking and talented competitors who are passionate about Arkansas and will strive to build upon the foundation of success in the program. We can’t wait to see them in the Cardinal and White next fall!”
