seems to be a recurring thing in all sports, except basketball now. Hmmm… and I was told we couldn’t compete in NIL in football because of how much it cost to play the game but would be willing to spend in other sports. Bottom line is we are cheap across the board. If the best paid teams in football cost 12 million we will only pay 6. If the best paid teams in baseball get paid 3 million we will try to get away with spending 500k. And it would be the same in basketball if Tyson didn’t have the Calipari connection. I think that falls squarely at the feet of our AD who does not seem capable of running an athletic department in the new age of college sports.

Our '24 class is ranked 17th with just two Top 100 players so I doubt it. It's not remotely close to our #1 class last year that had 13 Top 100 players and 7 made it to campus. We likely only get 1 this year as Carson Wiggins is the #77 overall prospect for the draft HS and College. And yes that is Jaxon's brother he throws 98 already.

Any immediate help is likely going to have to come from the portal.

The guys on the Highway To Hoover podcast were talking about this in their Arkansas preview show, but the big question they had was “where are the homegrown hitters?”

This year, the only homegrown hitters we had were Stovall and Diggs (who was terrible). The rest were transfers, including Holt who was a JUCO guy before hitting campus last year.

Yeah we mixed in Helfrick and Souza but that was about it in terms of homegrown guys for next year with high ceilings, maybe Jones if he doesn't transfer.

Reese Robinett will be back after RS'ing this year. But anybody could transfer so who knows.

Either way with how much we lose and our lackluster class, the portal is so key this offseason.

Hopefully we hit like we did in 2022 with guys like Lanzilli and Turner who came through and were our best hitters all year.

As mentioned previously, on the whole this offensive class didn’t pan out.

Ty Waid has 20 HR potential. He needs to eliminate some swing and miss, but I expect him to make a jump getting ABs all summer. He really should have been given some midweek ABs. He wasn't going to be any worse than some of the guys we ran out there and he has as much pop as anyone on the team.

Yeah Waid is a high end prospect and could definitely be high ceiling next year. See how he does this summer.

Didn't we lose three freshman to the draft that could hit?

I know that happens yearly but damn, we're about to lose the whole damn team again this season.

Seems like we’ve actually had a higher hit rate on some of the lower rated guys though. The class with Kjerstad wasn’t ranked very high IIRC but ended up with a lot of contributors. On the other hand guys like Cole Turney and Mason Neville were hyped as headliners lol

4 of them signed for a combined $11 million. DVH said in the postgame presser that decimated the class as they were hoping to get 2 on campus because they all could run and hit.

Also postgame DVH said this will be the third year in a row where we have a whole new team and is the way it is now with the draft and portal.

Skip ahead to past 8 minute mark

DVH was asked about Nate Thompson and basically said we need better players.

He was asked earlier by Hutch the presser about any "decisions" to be made and sidestepped the question and talked about roster turnover. Good on Hutch for asking it again and making it specifically about Nate.

Interestingly, DVH said they expect to lose White and Diggs as well as the entire rotation.

I'm actually surprised at how DVH seemed to throw quite a few players under the bus. He mentioned something about the rotation and Hagen carrying them and "one guy's arm's always hurt, the other got wild." I was a bit surprised at the barbs about Tygart, as well as his comment about needing better players in general.

He didn't hang NT out to dry, but he sure did call out the personnel.

Hagen, Tygart, and Molina were always gone this year. Diggs and White too they are juniors. Diggs lost a good amount of money though.

I expected us to lose the entire rotation, just found it interesting that DVH basically confirmed it along with White (which wasn’t a shocker given his draft projection).

The surprising one is Diggs given how terrible of a season he’s had and how much he regressed at the plate. He’s one who could benefit from summer ball plus another year of college to work on his approach.

Even expressed his disappointment with Hagen wearing out late.

Said we took an inning off him all year to save him for later in the year and he still wore out.

The fall of Arkansas baseball due to a prideful coach while Tony and Wes build programs and win is going to suck.

Its the Arkansas way though.

Nate's got to go...

Whether it's his inability to coach his philosophy or recruit the players that fit it, he has done neither.

So why in the hell is he still on the staff.

Watching our offense is the most vomit inducing experience I've ever seen.

From that presser, Nate is 100% safe.
