I know the offense had issues for 3 quarters, but they finished strong. Defensively it was nice to see some D-linemen getting in the backfield. I thought Tim Keenan and Tim Smith both played really well. Russaw was able to get pressure again when we wasn’t rushing 3 guys. Another sack for Q Robinson, and the linebackers were playing fast again. Other than a little confusion on a few zone reads, and a time or 2 we lost the RB in coverage, I thought it was a great night for the defense.

The QB overthrow 2 sure TDs that better QBs won't miss.
The secondary is going to be a problem vs Tenner and UGA.

Im expecting Georgia to exploit outside runs as well. Sideline to Sideline seems like an atrocious thing for the 4-2-5 to cover with wider hashes

They only gave up 103 yards passing all night. I’ll take it and I don’t care who we’re playing, that’s good

Looked like we were running a 3 man front in most of their successful outside runs early on. I could be wrong, I’ll have to go back and watch it again

I definitely caught a few 3 man fronts in the first half so you may be right. Think we pulled it out for a passing play or two as well

I don't disagree, but the qb for USF wasn't very accurate tonight. Other qbs BAMA face will be. That's all I was saying.

It’s not untrue. USF had I think 3 or 4 guys running wide open and he simply doesn’t make the throw. We are getting better though.

Offense is the best defense against the Dawgs. I think UGA is going to attack the secondary.
I'm interested to see how DeBoer game plans against UGA's defense. It's going to be a good game I think. A winnable game for BAMA. UGA isn't better at every position than BAMA like they were in 2023. Their receivers aren't better. Their running backs aren't better. Their linebackers aren't better. But their secondary is. Their o-line is (better than the line that started for BAMA tonight anyway).

It should be a very revealing game. All the pressure is still on them, because best believe Kirby doesn't want to lose to a first year coach at BAMA. Because he thinks it was Saban that was his daddy when it's really BAMA. That's what a win by BAMA reveals. A win by UGA reveals much less. It reveals either BAMA played poorly, or that UGA executed better. A win by UGA doesn't make Kirby Deboer's daddy. But a loss to Deboer means that Kirby is BAMA's bitch.

We also let a RB get over 100 yards. That used to almost never happen. That's unacceptable.

That first overthrow to the slot receiver gave me flashbacks to tennesse. Not saying it’ll happen. Just a little triggered.

Justin Jefferson played a heck of a game. 10 tackles (8 solo) and a sack. Sucks that he has to sit the first half next week at Wisconsin.

Their three running backs had 102 yards, combined.

I think our defense is not as good as they've looked against WKU and USF but I think they have a higher floor than I could pessimistically imagined as worst-case in the offseason. They rally to the ball well. Backers like Campbell get sideline to sideline much better on short and wide passes. The secondary has largely done well at tackling. Effort has been exceptional.

My big concern is how does this team generate pressure against better teams if the DC wants to avoid sending more than 4 rushers all that often to protect the young and/or inexperienced corners. I've said it before: this defense is going to need Robinson, Russaw, and Overton to be elite rushers or I fear we're going to see too many big passes completed over the top of the defense. I'm also a bit concern how they hold up to teams that still commit to playing power run because the scheme is really built to cope with the modern RPO spread.

Fair to say that the defense seems a bit more put together right now than the offense. I see some things better teams will exploit but playing defense starts with effort and they got that in spades.

I thought we played OK with some good things to build on.
I did not like the way we played the QB run game at all. There were multiple instances where we had a guy run by the QB to chase down a RB without the ball. The DBs weren’t great either. A functional throwing QB would have made this a very concerning game. That dude was wildly inaccurate at every level. I do think we will get better in the back end, but they aren’t there yet.
I did like the interior push from the DL. We also didn’t have any real coverage busts where a guy was running free in the open field. We seemed to handle the pace well without a lot of communication issues. Lots of young bucks got time, so there is plenty of reason to think we will improve over the course of the year.

Hesitant to say that other teams can replicate USF. Yes, they will undoubtedly have better throwing QBs, but they also don't have the QB run threat. That makes a big difference, especially when USF was that committed to it last night.

They did pretty well imo.

As we transition from the old 2 gap scheme I think people are going to have to learn to accept giving up more rushing yards as well.

The new staff is emphasizing beating your man and being disruptive to generate negative plays, rather than gap sound.

I think the back end is going to be a work in progress and we really need to play bend but don't break.

If we force field goals like last night that's how you win games on defense

Not to happy with the defense. South Florida cannot pass at all.

Ok, I'm counting the QB who had 108 yards on 23 carries. That wasn't 23 times he was flushed from the pocket. He got big yardage multiple times on designed runs.

Honestly not terribly concerned with yardage. That's going to happen, especially against teams that run that kind of tempo when you're not used to it. It's easy to get a little out of position at times. For the most part the defense stood up when it needed to, notwithstanding the TD on a short field following one of the fumbles.

Back end is so new and lots of youth. Some of those corners were getting beat. Hopefully we will keep getting better there.
