Right now it looks like there's a good chance we have former 5* recruits JD Davison, Jahvon Quinerly, Josh Primo, Charles Bediako, and Nimari Burnett on the roster next year. And they could potentially all be on the court at the same time given the way we play.

Most talented roster since....ever?

Yea I think it's reasonable to say our 2021-2022 roster will be the most talented roster we've had since 1991-92 (Horry, Robinson, Caffey, Sprewell) - and probably deeper than that one.

Maybe 2002 - Mo Williams, Dudley, Grizzard, Walker, Meade, Shelton, Pettway. That was a pretty good, deep roster with really good and highly recruited (Mo, Grizzard, Walker, Meade, Shelton) college players on it.

Burnett shot 36% from three his last year in High school, he is a lot better shooter than he showed at Texas Tech. He's not on Petty's level but he had a few games in HS where he hit 6 or 7 threes in a game. He has really good range too, he can hit Steph Curry range threes, that's one complaint though is that sometimes he shoots from too far back.

You can tell from these first two shots here that he has a good looking shot and good range.

His entire situation feels a whole lot like JQ

His shooting numbers from the field and the 3 point line were pretty terrible. 28% from the field, 17% from 3. But he shot 88.9% from the line on 3 attempts per game.

Doesn't TT run Grant's patented stand-around-until-there's-4-seconds-left-then-chuck-up-a-wild-off-balance-contested-shot offense? We used to have a lot of good shooters with terrible numbers too.

I wouldn't describe what TTU does as Grantsketball. It's more along the lines of UVA or Wisconsin. There's a method to what they do. They're just extremely deliberate to the point that it's about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Edit: they were 33rd in offensive efficiency and 317 in tempo.

Yea, Texas TEch has finished in the Top 50 in Offensive Efficiency in all 5 of Beard's years there.

They've also finished 327, 247, 231, 236 and 317 in tempo.

Yeah I don't even think it's that inexplicable that he shot poorly in the first half of his true freshman year. It may just be some randomness as much as it is anything to do with Texas Tech's system.

I'm just a believer in the idea that a good free throw shooter is usually a pretty good shooter in general (and I don't really think a middling free throw shooter goes on a 32-36 heater).

I mean depending on how we finish this year and If JQ returns we may be getting some preseason National Championship buzz. Definitely will be preseason top 5

Completely agree. If you can make shots from 15 feet you can make them from 22 feet. It's just a matter of training yourself to maintain the same shot mechanics.

I think adding Burnett would be the biggest addition we could make. His growth potential is higher than anybody else out there (for example, the kid from Penn State) and I trust our staff to help him reach that potential. Throw in the fact that we might get 2 years of him (maybe), and it seems like a no brainer for our one spot left.

Are all these guys available to play immediately? I can't remember where we are on all that with the NCAA.

Yeah JQ is the only one I'm a little worried about. He looked like a good college player before he presumably got COVID and struggled for a while after he got back, but over the last month or so he has looked like an NBA PG. He's getting his own shot whenever he wants it, knocking down deep 3s at a consistently high rate, and creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. It's just a question of whether anyone wants to roll the dice on his current level of play being the kind of player he will continue to be in the future as opposed to the guy we saw back in November and December simply being on a hot streak. I could see someone taking that gamble in the middle/end of round 2, but if he bets on himself and plays like he has lately for a full season he's a mid/late 1st round guy.

Age is an issue too, Quinerly is the same age as Petty and Herb. All 3 of them are 22 years old.

I hope he comes back, he would be really rolling the dice going pro after this year.

As far as I know, yes. I think all that is still up in the air is whether individual conferences will grant blanket waivers to intraconference transfers. I may be getting basketball and football confused on that second point though.

Burnett would be eligible from day 1. Not sure about interconference transfers.

Yeah unless some super skilled big on a shitty team like Disu decides to put his name in the portal I'm not sure we're going to get anyone better than a guy like Burnett.

I would have balked at guys like him and JQ under the last couple regimes and opted for the polished, older, lower ceiling guy like the kid from Penn State because I didn't trust them to make the kid any better than the rough start he came from.

But this ain't the old regimes.

Hmm. Hopefully it's just because Nimari asked him to as to not spoil the announcement.

I think the NCAA and SEC 1-year blanket waivers for 2021 transfers to get immediate eligibility apply to both sports and are up for vote in April.
