Idk somebody asked Charles Henry on IG Live about what our returning bigs need to do to help Bruner nextYear and he said the staff was so excited about Reese after his Hip surgery.......and he didn’t really say 1 word about Javian....and quickly went over him

Happy to hear that. It is pretty obvious that Oats really likes what Reese can bring to the team/offense. That hip must've been worse than we wanted to think.

I hope we see Bruner and Reese on the floor at times next year. Reese can likely be a good bit more productive with a legitimate big guy in Bruner doing all of the things that position requires. Galin wasn't capable of doing it and even though Javian showed some flashes, he wasn't able to do it consistently. We really struggled (especially defensively) when Reese was the only "big" on the floor too.

Reese being a true stretch 4 with Bruner down low and a combination of JQ, Primo, Herb, and Shack moving around the perimeter and/or slashing could be really awesome. Then you consider the additional depth of Rojas, Gary, etc. Hope i'm not more excited for this roster than I should be, but it's hard not to be excited.

Reese, with his skill set, is actually the perfect big for Oats system. Hopefully he has his head screwed on straight

Limited rebounder and defensive liability is the perfect big?

I like Reese, but he is a role player who needs to come off the bench.

Actually, I think Bruner is. Play maker on the defensive end while also being gifted enough to play inside, outside, and in transition on offense. Also good enough to lead the break, which is something Reese should definitely never do. Bruner also averaged over nine boards a game last year.

Reese is a good fit for the offense as a bench/role player, but he isn't half the complete player that Bruner is imho. And that isn't so much of a knock of Reese as it is respect for Bruner's abilities and how he should/could fit on this team.

I agree. I think people overplay Reese’s skill set

Yep. The "tall, can shoot OK = Oats' perfect front court player" narrative needs to die. If you gave Oats the choice between a big who can finish in transition, pass reasonably well, rebound, and play effective defense, but can't shoot very well, and a big who can shoot but sucks at all that other stuff, he'd take the first guy every single time. As would 99% of the coaches in college basketball. Because guys like Alex Reese are bench players on good teams.

Top-20 sophomore Barry Dunning was observed by NBA scouts this year. But, his goals are landing his degree and becoming a doctor.

His focus though, is on college. He went in-depth on Alabama, Auburn, others with @Stockrisers.

quote:

Interesting stories in basketball is the new regular, here’s a new one, Barry Dunning. The 2022 prospect is rated as the No. 18 sophomore, according to 247Sports. This past season, he averaged 15.7 points and 10 rebounds a game. Also recorded 60 blocked shots and 45 steals, per Al.com.

During his dominant season, his hard work, talent, and character was approached by the big leagues. The NBA had several scouts watch Dunning this past year and also learn more about him off the floor. His aspirations outside the basketball court are even bigger than the game.

Dunning told Stockrisers.com that he is hoping to become a doctor one day and also earn his college degree. When asked about being scouted by the NBA, he said: “I am blessed and grateful to be recognized as a top player to maybe be able to be drafted out of high school, but my kind is focusing on college.”

With that, he has indeed been pursued by several colleges, especially in his home state of Alabama. Both Alabama and Auburn offered Dunning already and followed those scholarship offers by having him visit this past season.

Alabama: “Alabama was great. I love everything thing about the school. They’re very together and I love the coaching staff and their motivation to get better”

Auburn: “Auburn is a family based program. I love the campus and how everyone their supports one another. The drive the program has to accomplish their ambitions is very motivating.”

Amongst his other offers are Louisiana at Lafayette, Ole Miss, and South Alabama.

He also has tons of interest from some major programs. Amongst them: Iowa State, North Carolina, Clemson, Wake Forest, Ohio State, amongst others. He’s had the chance to talk with coaches from Auburn, Alabama, and Ohio State, hopes to hear from more on June 15th when the programs are able to contact him.

Yeah, I don't buy the hype on Reese. If he is shown the door, oh well.

I don't get the hate for Reese I thought he out preformed Davis and Smith last year while playing through injuries and presumably a lot of pain.

I think he will have a pretty good year this year if he can stay healthy.

Saying he's a bench player isn't hate. It's just an objective evaluation of his talent level. Reese can shoot fairly well for a guy his size, but that's about it. He isn't a good rebounder, defender, or passer, and he doesn't offer anything in transition besides the occasional trailing spot up 3. He's a one trick pony, and those tend to be bench players. Especially when the player is a forward and the one trick is shooting instead of rebounding.

This. And he's not even average at the things that should be a given for a guy his size. He doesn't rebound, is soft on D, and can't finish at the rim. He's a SG in a F body. Shooting is a nice attribute in a guy his size and could be a great weapon. But you've got to do the fundamental things that are expected from your position at least adequately or you're a net negative on the floor.
