I'm guessing we'd look at the grad market for a backup PG who can slide to 2-guard as well. Obviously somebody will have to go free a spot.

Well we technically have 0 roster spots open. We had one, and we filled that with Ambrose.
It's become pretty obvious that Kira is gonna be a first round pick which means he likely leaves so we are looking for someone to fill his spot, which is why we are all of the sudden offering Ellis and trying to get Primo to reclassify at the last minute.
We’ve been targeting multiple recruits at multiple different positions all year knowing we only have one scholarship “available”. I don’t think this has as much to do with Kira leaving as it does the transfer bug. One of AG’s banes here was abiding by that open scholarship philosophy and not over-recruiting to account for potential transfers and early exits. That’s all this is, is preparing for those losses (including the potential of Kira leaving). If we don’t have any, then players like Hawkins, Smith, and Forbes might have to find another school.

Kiras plan (or his moms plan) has always been for him to get to the NBA as soon as possible. It’s the reason he came to college at 17. He is gone.
What other people are we currently recruiting hard for this class aside from Primo and Ellis? I dont know of any.
Looked to me like we had already moved onto recruiting kids for the 2021 class til this last month when we offered Ellis out of the blue and started trying to get 2021 guards to reclassify to 2020. Its not an accident the timing of that lines up with all these mocks coming out having Kira going in the top 40 picks and Kira playing himself into a probable first rounder.

I don’t know if we have to have a good backup point guard (could be a serviceable combo guard like George was saying), but going into the season with Shackleford or Petty as the 3rd option to handle the ball and set up the offense seems like a hole to me.
Especially when Herb is the second option.
It’s one thing to have no good second option in your first year as coach (and you have an option that just didn’t get a waiver), it’s another to have no good second option in your second year.
Of course this is all hypotheticals - we don’t know if Kira will leave or if we’ll pick up a grad transfer or what. Or who knows, maybe Shackleford can do it.

Its possible. If Galin or Hawkins do transfer I think getting a good grad transfer that can play the 5 would be more of a priority than a backup PG. We are gonna be a guard heavy team next year as it stands already.

Does Buffalo have anyone that could be a grad transfer to us that Oats is familiar with and has some trust in?

Do y’all think Primo starts next year? And can he handle the ball....because After JQ idk if we have another ball handler.
Edit: LOL, yall literally just talked about backup PG on last page and I was too lazy to read
Right now The starting lineup would look like:
JQ
Shack
Petty
Herb
GT5/Reese/Rojas

100% agree. If Oats can land a Immediate impact big that can rebound I think we are gonna be pretty good

No I don't think he would start over any of those 4 guards you listed. His strength is his shooting, he said his goal this year was to work on his driving and his ball handling and he has gotten better at it but he definitely projects as more of a shooter. He has the potential to be a Petty level 3 point shooter.

Seems like perceptions of our roster for next year (and what we might need) depend a lot on what you think Herb's position is. And, to a lesser extent, Gary and Ambrose.
To me Herb is a 4 now. I would say he's our best rim protector but that would imply that we have more than one. And if he has to switch onto a guard/wing, cool he's our best perimeter defender too.
I don't know what Gary is - I've never seen him play. But if the recruiting profiles are right then he's a 6'5/6'6 215 pound guy that is a great athlete and isn't a great shooter. In Oats system, I could see a guy like that playing some 4.
Ambrose fairly clearly won't be anything but a 4 at first. A stretch 4 maybe, but a 4.
File all of this under pointless speculation on a very slow work day.

A little late to be offering him with it being less than a month til he chooses a school. Looks like Alabama already has him pretty much locked up.

Hell, I forgot about Rojas.
We actually have a lot of guys that can potentially play the 4. And then Reese, Davis, Galin/Hawkins at 5.
I think I'd prefer to bring in another ball handler (if Kira leaves).
But if the best available player is a 5/rim protector, then sure.

frick it. Make our roster 3 PGs and 10 SGs. Nothing but 3s or layups

Oats calls his style positionless basketball, the forwards he recruits can handle the ball and are f/g combos, so calling them a forward or guard is meaningless.
You say the bigs we will have are Smith, Hawkins, and Reese but this whole speculation of having an extra spot is based on one of them transferring, so we would only have two of them.
G/F combo players we have are - these guys would play the 3 and 4 positions mostly
Herb
Petty
Ambrose
Gary
True guards we have who would play the 1 or 2 are
Quinerly
Shack
Forbes
Primo or Ellis
Some of these guys can play any position 1-4. Herb would also fall into that category.
I think 8 players for 4 positions is plenty. 9 if you count Rojas who is a 4/5 combo but more of a 4.
I personally would rather get a big if we have a spot open up from us losing a big.

Eh, it's positionless to an extent. You still need guys that can guard certain types of players.

There's Javian too. So it's 3 guys.
Granted none of us really know if Hawkins can be a viable guy. It's not an ideal position group for sure.
But constructing a roster is all about trade offs and I see a lack of proven ball handling ability in this list:
quote:
Herb
Petty
Ambrose
Gary
Quinerly
Shack
Forbes
Primo or Ellis
If Forbes is playing the 1 we're in trouble. Ellis and Primo are more of an unknown, but Ellis just looks like a 3 and D guy in his videos.
I don't see a lot of 1s in that group. Positionless basketball or not, you need to be a good ball handler for that.

Really we don't have any major needs currently if we get Primo or Ellis. It's fun to speculate what we need more if Smith or Hawkins leaves, a big or a backup point guard. I personally think that the 5 is by far our weakest position.

Buffalo Jr. G Jayvon Graves was recruited by Oats and having a really good year. He is averaging 17 points, 5 rebs, 2 assists per game. No idea if he would be open to grad transferring here or not.
