I think the FOGs are scared. They know damn good and well what Nate is doing will make any team in any sport better. So they are afraid the hoops team might divert attention from the football team for a change for good reasons, not inexplicable ones like losing to Northeastern.

Five-star guard Daishen Nix has set an official visit to Alabama for September, also working on KU and UCLA dates, a source told @Stockrisers. ‘Kentucky offer also expected’ hence why they made his final list.

Having Daishen Nix and Nimari Burnett visiting on the same weekend is pretty exciting.

I feel like we have a legit shot with Burnett, but Nix putting UK in his top 5 based on the anticipation of receiving an offer kind of tips his hand IMO.

I agree with that. And coupled with his latest statement, you could easily see both Alabama and Maryland being nothing more than a hat on the table.

“My first two, Maryland and Alabama have been showing me the most love out of all the rest of the schools and is why I chose them in my top five,” Nix explained. #RollTide

Even if that’s all it ultimately ends up being, it still doesn’t hurt being in his final 5 from a current/future recruiting aspect.
I am still hoping we get Earl Timberlake for an OV.

May not hurt, but it’s not like we haven’t been a hat on the table of a top 20 prospect before. I’d rather not be included at all if we don’t have any shot at him. Let our staff fixate on other realistic options.
If UK offers, and I’m not sure why they haven’t already, they’re going to be tough to beat based off of all his comments.
Having said that, already having an official visit set is a good sign for us. Although the assumption by some that we lead seems a bit misguided.

It sure would be nice if Coach could show these top recruits the plans to a new gym while they visit. At least plans of a gym they could hope to play in.

Sucks man but I never expected to get him anyways. We have a really really good chance with Nimari Though

Doesn’t having our hat on the table mean we have a shot at any recruit? Let’s say a top 5 recruit wore Kentucky underwear, but he wanted to visit Tuscaloosa. I hope we wouldn’t say, “Nah, we good. You’re a Kentucky lean.”
I see your point and agree that we don’t want to waste too much time on recruits without legitimate interest. At the end of the day it’s all about who we sign. But being a hat at the table is still a positive and better than not being considered at all.

@TideHoopNews quoted this from his article.
I can respect that he didn’t want to waste anyone’s time if he already knew where he was going

I guess this explains his weird comment about when he would commit. He already knew.

I don’t totally disagree. But I think the point some are making is that even Grant and Johnson didn’t have a lot of problems getting our hat on the table. It was closing that was tougher for those guys. There’s no question in my mind that Oats will be great for our program. And I won’t hold any of this recruiting class against him. But compared to the past, getting our hat on the table isn’t really an improvement.
That said, sounds like we never truly had a chance with this guy if this is the way it was gonna go down.

Landing top recruits doesn’t even mean that. I’m glad we landed Collin Sexton, but he didn’t exactly help with any top recruits the next year (or this one).

This is exactly my point. If you’re listed in the top 5 for a top recruit, you can’t stop recruiting him even if he (and others) already knows where he’s going.

I’m not saying it’s not a positive in this scenario considering he just announced for another school, but if he dragged out the process another few months? Then yes, I’d rather not be considered at all so we can spend valuable recruiting time on someone else. Props to the kid for ending it early though. That doesn’t seem to happen often.

Not that I disagree with what you’re saying, because I remember all too well how we’ve all joked over the years about being just a hat on the table, but I am separating what this staff is doing from what has been done in the past.
It’s possible that the recruiting efforts won’t reap any more rewards than what we’ve been accustomed to for the past two decades. I am basically just choosing to view things like this with on optimistic lens and hope for improvements across the board.
Avery nearly broke me. I was hate-watching a ton of our games last year. Oats has been a reset button of sorts for me. I’m really excited for the program again.

And while it sounds like it might be in this case, it ain’t over till he signs. A breakout season by Alabama might just turn some heads and change some minds and you NEVER stop recruiting until they sign.

Most basketball coaches/programs stop recruiting a kid when they commit elsewhere. With so few spots, better to spend time and effort elsewhere.
