Hey, y’all go type in “Nate Oats” on Twitter and read all these FOG tweets.

Oats is, warranted or not, going to be on the hot seat going into year 2. We are probably going to lose ~25 games this year. It really doesn't matter what the circumstances are, if you lose that many games a large chunk of the fanbase is going to turn against you. Doesn't matter if it is year 1 or year 10. The only real exception is a situation like what Pearl took over at Auburn where they had an entire roster of mid-major and DII players, not just a couple. Avery didn't exactly leave Oats a talent laden, well coached team but we shouldn't be this bad either.
I'm telling you now that if everyone will just give him the time and support, he'll make this a top notch program in the SEC and nation.
We need to be a help, not a hindrance!

Yeah, I normally agree with his takes, but there’s only one way he’s on the hot seat in year 2 and that’s if Byrne, for whatever reason, isn’t the AD next year. An AD isn’t going to fire his first major hire at the university after year 2 even if the fan base is calling for it.

Bama an 11.5 point favorite tonight

Win tonight get to 3-4 and regroup. @PennState is the only non winnable game left on the OOC schedule IMO. If we can go into conference play 7-5 with some good wins over Furman, Richmond, Belmont, and SFA I will feel good

looks like we played no D. And we gave up 80 points in the pre season game and that should have told you sunshine pumpers this was going to be a long year.
You're going to have to give up this idea that we're going to get 80 possessions, score 90, and hold our opponents to 60 points. It does look like it's going to be a rough year, but giving up 80 points in a preseason game is hardly the biggest clue.

I rewatched yesterday’s game and we are the worlds worst at ball watching when we play man2man on defense and Kira is the worst one. Too many times we were watching the ball and lost our guy and he got lose for an open 3. That shite has to get fixed.

I'm not saying he's likely to be fired after 2 years. I would be very surprised if we are this bad again next year. I'd like to think they won't be this bad in 2 months. I think all coaches should get 4 years absent any off court issues. If they can't win with a team where their guys are the upperclassmen then it is what it is. But this team is going to win like 8-10 games unless something drastically changes in terms of their defense and ball security. Now let's say tbey don't improve this season or next and we win ~20 games total his first two years. Coaches can survive that, but it isn't a foregone conclusion by any means. A disaster first season can be nothing or it can snowball.

Here’s my view:
We have a Coach who is a great offensive mind and has some beautiful play calls. That is why I’m encouraged and certain he will be a good coach for us. It’s just going to be ugly for most of the year.
The problem is 3-fold.
#1: We have players and a program who haven’t been used to running up-tempo and have been running an iso-heavy offense for the past decade. So while we have players who should be experienced, they should be considered inexperienced within this offensive system. Even the older guys are learning how to play. Oats also isn’t adapting his system to fit what he has, which, in my opinion, is probably a good thing for the future of the program as it will give the current players valuable experience playing in his system.
#2: Our depth is just horrible, especially at the 1 and 4 positions. It doesn’t help that our backup PG has been injured and has been pretty horrible. Hopefully Quinerly alleviates those concerns next year.
#3: Perhaps the biggest issue this team has is the lack of a rim-protecting big. I said this multiple times before the season, but losing Donta Hall was always going to be a huge hit for this team. The fact that we have no one that’s able to protect the rim gives opposing guards (or even bigs) no fear from attacking the rim which in turn collapses our defense leaving wide open shooters all over the place. This is my one area of concern for next year, as Isaiah Jackson is no longer an option and we have no reason to expect better rim protection next year. This is where Nate HAS to find himself a transfer or recruit (maybe Bediako?) to help with that next year if we want to improve.

We are shooting FTs better, our effort is better, and our set plays out of timeouts get the look we want most of the time we just can’t make them. And it doesn’t take an act of God for us to inbound the ball. I’m satisfied so far with that. Now Oats just has to get his players

The urgency for a big is huge, and I hope he's seriously looking internationally, too.

The team plays hard I do like that and John Petty has really stepped up his game and become a hell of a player.
Coach needed to sit Kira Lewis yesterday for awhile. He was totally out of control and frustrated. When you go to the hole and the ref has swallowed his whistle, it's time to go to plan B.
The post players, if handled right, could help. They have shown they can score some from the post with the baby hook shots. They won't get doubled with people chasing Petty so they will get opportunities. Just stay poised.
The offense MUST be built around Petty. Screens, the old picket fence, whatever, but he has to jack up the vast majority of the shots until someone else starts finding the range with some consistency. Midget guards and Herb crashing to the rim just to turn it over get it rejected or draw an offensive foul is killing the team.

I have enough confidence in Coach Oats, that if he can't turn our program around, then we just need to get rid of basketball. If he can't do it, then I don't believe anyone can.

His style of play will be fun even if we suck . I do think he can get the players to play his system at Bama where we don’t have to have high profile big guys

The thing that makes it difficult is knowing we could be so much better than we are if we slow things down to a normal pace. But that’s not what we hired Oats to do and for future purposes we should hope he continues to force the ridiculously up-tempo pace.
Another thing that makes it difficult is knowing we have a lot of pieces that could thrive in his system, but aren’t because they aren’t used to playing at this pace and using actual plays.
I think that ultimately Nate’s best teams will be the senior heavy teams using players who have been in the system since their Freshman year. Maybe we sprinkle in a young guy or 2, but at the pace we play and with the plays we call it’s going to be hard to win with young teams. I’d compare this to Villanova, who regularly lands some top players who struggle/barely play their freshman years. This isn’t an easy system to just pickup and play.

Now you see why I hoped one of these assistant coaches had strong international recruiting experience?
