We gotta stop letting Petty dribble. He just can't do it on a consistent basis

He reminds me of a knockoff Malik Monk or JR Smith.

Zones usually slow down the game and lead to longer possessions. Seems counter to what OatzNHoez wants to do

Also, to play heavy zone D well takes a ton of practice/different mentality. A lot of teams will have success w a zone wrinkle but they couldn't just run 50%+ zone

Malik Monk was very streaky like Petty but unlike Petty he was hot at least 1 out of every 3 games.....whereas Petty is hot 1 out of every 30

Monk was the better/higher rated player coming out of high school but yes he could be streaky.

Obviously, it is still early but I thought you guys would start the season better.

No offense, but saying zones slow the game only applies to tighter zones that stay closer to the lane. (Kind of like the pack line zone defense)
My teams play mostly exclusively zone but it's zone pressure defenses that are extended and vary between full, 3/4 and half court. We play very fast and have had alot of success with it.
You can also use so many different varieties of half court zone involving traps, overloads, etc. You can also use a bump and run man variety of man defense that's effective.

My guess is that it would take a large time commitment to effectively play any type trapping / high ball pressure zone that would match Oates's game philosophy.

Maybe it's the type you wrinkle you add with a lot of upperclassmen who are already effective with your basics as a coach.

Right now, that we have a lot of players who look like they've never defended a screen makes me think Oates probably wants things as simple as possible.

What is sad is that most of these guys only play man in high school. Multiple defenses are not taught well enough.

Beetle Bolden. But Kira is also probably gone.

Plus I would expect Galin and maybe Petty to transfer

I think Kira will be back. He’s not ready for the NBA. He’s a great playmaker but still has a lot to work on. Learn to play defense, cut down on the turnovers, and become a better shooter from 3. He may want to leave but I think his draft projections will lead him to come back. There’s a reason he couldn’t get off the bench on that all star team this summer.

I think Galin is for sure goneafter this year.

Next year we will have:
Javian
Rojas
Hawkins
Ambrose
Reese
Possibly Bediako

Galin doesn’t have a spot

I saw in the other thread where Michigan St. offered Bediako and Duke is also interested. He’s going to be a tough get.

It is my understanding that our advantage with Bediako is that we would take him if he reclassifies to 2020. That's why we got the two crystal ball picks IIRC.

Furman is another really good mid-major. They are actually ranked ahead of us on KenPom (#70 vs #76).

We didn't do ourselves any favors scheduling so many solid, veteran mid-majors with a new system and scheme.

The schedule would have been fine if half of our team didn't tear their ACLs.
