The reason I'm "writing him off" is because hes been in Deboers system longer than any qb on campus and still doesn't have a good enough grasp of it to start. Ty Simpson learned it faster than he did.

Yes, he has a stronger arm but struggles with touch passes and rifles everything. He did it a few times in the Indiana game. The pass called for touch and he throws an 0-2 98 MPH fastball. Russell will surpass him this offseason.

Cool, that means we have 2 quarterbacks better than Ty

My wife even asked me last night what haven’t they been playing Mack more because she thought he looked better than Ty.

Did you mention that he likely can’t process the offensive checks and read the defense the way Ty can?

Ty had something click in the last offseason that made him a potential Heisman contender in the 1st half of this season prior to the injury. My guess is that Mack needs that light bulb to come on still, and it would be pretty ugly if Kirby, Venebles, or even Blake Baker had half a season of game film and 2 weeks to prepare for him. Just a guess though, and I wanted Ty pulled when it was clear his injury caused him to be so limited that defenses were teeing off on us.

No I told her the truth. Also if these coaches are so smart, why’d they stick Ty back in the game when he had broken ribs? I mean it ain’t like Ty was lightning up their defense. I’m not sure what we’d do to make up those 67 yards of passing in over 2 quarters of football if we’d sat Ty? Shoot, Mack surpassed those numbers in one drive.

Oh no- I can't even imagine that happening

Come on now. It's way past time to look decisively forward. KDB can't continue to half-arse everything

Backup QBs often times have some success in games they come into both in college and NFL. Different tendencies, skill sets, etc. that the other team didn’t prepare for.

Once the tape and tendencies are out, that’s when you find out how good a QB truly is.

Yeah I know. I watched the second half of our season. We saw exactly how good Ty was.

Sounds like you’re a believer that injuries don’t impact performance. Interesting and bold take there, so you’ll understand if I choose to believe the opposite.

You mean the way Ty gets in a pissing contest with the opposing DC before most snaps? Checking off, then when the defense shifts, checking off again, then either wasting a timeout or rushing to get the snap off before the play clock expires? Is that what you’re talking about?
Ty was great until DC’s got a few games of film on him and saw that he can’t hit a deep route so the safeties can cheat up, closing down any pitiful semblance of a running game and clogging the intermediate routes. When he gets pressured he stops processing and forces the ball to one of his security blankets in Germie or Cuevas (it remains to be seen who will replace them in Ty’s world). Isaiah Horton had man coverage on a play yesterday and he knew it so he’s waving his arms before the snap trying to get Ty’s attention and Ty never even looked his way.
When everything was working, Ty looked like a Heisman candidate. But when stuff stopped working, instead of adjusting, he lost his confidence, started pressing, and played pretty poorly down the stretch. He should have been benched against Oklahoma and Mack should have come in and maybe we win that game. At least Mack isn’t afraid to pull it down and run when things break down. Ty became a statue in the pocket and his game suffered dramatically. Even when he had nothing but green grass in front of him and could run for a first down, he wouldn’t. Maybe he can get his mojo back and be a decent QB but I think you are deluding yourself if you think he’s going to return to the same level of play that he displayed in September. His weaknesses are known now and some of them are pretty hard to cover up or overcome.

Umm…RW dropped plenty of deep balls that hit him directly in the hands this season. At least 2 that were sure fire touchdowns just off the top of my head. Having your best deep ball threat not be able to catch impacts the deep ball ability.

That said, Ty’s injury impacted his deep ball accuracy, but talking like Ty never had a deep ball means 1) you didn’t watch the games, 2) are just trolling, or 3) Ty stole your girl.

Ty Simpson completed TWO passes over 30 air yards this season. TWO!! Out of 14 attempts. The 14 attempts show that either Grubb or Ty must have decided he can’t hit one either since he only averaged 1 attempted pass over 30 yards per game.

No I believe if an injury is affecting a quarterback negatively, you take him out. When you have zero on the scoreboard and you only have 67 yards through the air, and your starter has broken ribs, you try the backup. This isn’t hard. I assume you leave your starter in until he’s completely physically and mentally broken? Well I choose to believe the opposite

Mack hit a 34 yarder last night, so he’s nearly matched Ty’s deep throws

Simpson does not have it for one reason or another. His problem is both physical and mental. His comment twice in the interview after the Oklahoma win, "we are not finished" bothered me. Give the team credit for a great come back win and move on. Reminded me of Patrick Reed saying three or four time in the interview after winning the Masters, "this being my first major win." He has not smelled a major since. Sometimes my decision making process is based on the little things until I am proven wrong. I could be wrong here.

I literally said in this thread that I wanted him removed once it was clear his injury was so limiting that defenses were teeing off on our offense. Not sure how that isn’t clear to you.

Mack has been in CKD's system the longest of any QB on our roster and still cannot manage it well enough to start. He should have had a leg up on all the other quarterbacks last offseason in regards to the QB battle but still got beat out by Ty and it wasn't even close.
