I was hoping to see Austin Mack. From what I heard in the spring , the team seemed to gel with him. Ty has been with 2 different OC and still not sniffed the field in any meaningful time. I have my doubts...

To be fair, Milroe’s pocket was perfectly fine when he stared down both DB’s for pick sixes

This is polar opposite from the reports I read.

Mack was clearly behind Simpson and Russell.

ETA: Even Ryan Grubb said so himself:

quote:

“He is. He is right now,” Simpson told Ryan Fowler on Thursday when asked if Simpson would be the starter if the season started Saturday. “We don’t really deal in absolutes until we have to, but I was trying to answer that as honestly as I could. I knew that people were looking for direction and, shoot, so are the guys in the room. Those were not surprising things. Those are things that we had already talked about with the guys. We had our post-spring evaluations done with the guys.

“Ty took care of the football better, he operated better. I thought he improved for an older quarterback – and I know young to playing or starting experience, but I thought for an older guy, especially towards the latter part of the spring, he really started to show more of those characteristics. But we’re still going to let them compete. We still are right now. We will again in fall camp.”

I am hoping for a Mac Jones type of year. We have a great OL and weapons around him.

Ty Simpson will be fine if the OL gives him the confidence to not bail from the pocket and get frenetic. If there is one thing I’ve gleaned from limited play time is that Simpson is quick to bail instead of climbing up the pocket or side stepping to buy another moment to throw.

If our OL is shaky, Simpson will probably have us in secondary offense scramble drills often. If he’s young Aaron Rodgers then cool, if he’s just a normal power conference college starter then we may struggle with consistency.

Playing QB is 50% confidence and not cocky swagger, but confident in knowing what you’re doing.

Ty has exuded that so far in interviews. I think the whole team just feels more comfy in year 2 with DeBoer.

First year starter, with not much experience.

He won't be 2012 AJ or 2020 Mac.

Might be 2011 AJ or 2015 Coker. That would be my guess. They both won national titles.

Yep, and Ty will have a top 10 defense which gives him 6 points difference in a lot of games. He doesn’t have to be Bryce Young or Tua or Mac.

I’m honestly tired of the last 4 years of hero ball. It will be interesting to actually run plays. I’m hoping for Mac Jones 2.0.

I think he's always had all of the tools to be an elite QB.. the only concern I have with him is him trusting his arm a bit too much. I think Saban wasnt as high on him because he's a "gunslinger" type, and we all know Saban wanted every drive to end with a kick of some type. He had a couple of throws vs Mercer last year that would have been picked off if it was anyone but Mercer. If he stays within the offense and doesn't try to put the ball in crazy windows constantly he will be fine.

This and the quickness that Ty bails on the pocket and rolls out are my two big concerns. The pocket escape artist routine is something you can see even in his HS tape. I'm encouraged that comments from Grubb suggest he's been the best with ball security in practice.

I just want Ty to be himself. Do what he does well. He don't need to be compared to those guy.

It would be pretty shocking if he wasn't successful. He has the talent & time to learn. He has tons of talent around him & one of the best playcallers in the game helping him out. It's all set up for him to succeed.

Our WRs were fine last year. Bernard and Williams are outstanding to elite, adding Horton is helpful because he's talented and the new offense runs best with a size guy, but it’s lagniappe frankly.

We couldn’t run basic offensive concepts because our QB couldn’t process them. A simple hot read quick slant behind a blitz would’ve scored TDs on many occasions.

My questions stem from the fact that our new QB sat behind the guy who couldn’t make HS freshman level adjustments and the fact that we haven’t seen him in any major game situations or even take many snaps due to Milroe not putting bad teams away.

I'm optimistic, but yes I have questions at QB.

I expect him to be real good. I’ve been saying if he starts that USF game instead of Buchner, Milroe would have never gotten his job back

That's not true. I've heard Ty was not mature for the most part that year.

Nah. Haven't you heard? Whole team would have mutinied and refused to play for him.

I really think DeBoer didn’t want to step on toes last year. He lost his OC and felt super uncomfortable trying to mix things up.

Milroe is a hell of a football player but not a great QB
