Damn. Heard he had been shot and rushed to DCH.
Occurred on the West side of town.
Police was serving a warrant to a 20 year old, that already had a rap sheet. Worthless POS.

Now is basically the safest point in our lives to be a police officer in America. I'm almost 40, and the stats before me were even uglier for rate of officer death.

Yeah, I was going to say something similar, but I didn't want to derail the thread.

I listened to an interesting podcast last week that touched on a study that was done gauging how much children these days are allowed by their parents to "roam" when playing outside.

The vicinity that kids are allowed to play outside of their homes by themselves has decreased at an alarming rate in the last century. The reason is that parents are afraid that their kids will be susceptible to bullies, predators, or other forms of harm.

The kicker is that the world is safer now than its probably ever been in history. The reason for the over-sheltering is that people in the 1st world have an increasingly lower overall fear threshold than in decades past for various reasons, many of them unfounded. It was kind of depressing to listen to tbh.

If anyone wants to listen to or read:

but I digress. Really horrible that this happened to this officer, and I feel awful for his family and loved ones.

A 20-year-old with prior arrests in at least two robberies and a shooting has been charged with capital murder in the killing of veteran Tuscaloosa police Investigator Dornell Cousette. Luther Bernard Watkins Jr., who police say was wounded in the Monday-night shootout with Cousette at a west Tuscaloosa home, was served with the warrant Tuesday at UAB Hospital. The charge carries no bond.

When the 20 yr old young man made the decision to kill a policeman Monday night it was the last day he'll ever be a free man. There's no chance for parole with those consequences nor should there be.
Prayers to Officer Cousette & his family.

And it is that way in every reasonable metric. If you are interested in that kind of stuff, Steven Pinker's The Better Angels of our Nature is the premier academic text on the subject.
