Nick Saban is confident Tua Tagovailoa will be ready to play in Alabama's upcoming showdown vs. LSU on Nov. 9 after undergoing "tightrope" surgery on Sunday for a high ankle sprain suffered against Tennessee.
Rolling to his left, Tagovailoa was tackled from behind and his leg felt the brunt of a 300-pound defensive lineman crashing to the turf. He was helped off the field by trainers, before walking to the locker room under his own power and leaving the stadium via ambulance for treatment.
“Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high-ankle sprain last night against Tennessee,” Saban said in a statement. “Our physicians performed a successful tight-rope procedure on his right ankle this morning. This is the same injury, but the opposite ankle that Tua injured last season. Tua will miss next week’s game against Arkansas, but we expect a full and speedy recovery.”
Tagovailoa underwent successful tightrope surgery on his ankle, a procedure designed to accelerate recovery for foot injuries, particularly in athletes. Doctors reduce the gap between the tibia and fibula, two leg bones crucial to proper ankle function. According to the Northwell medical journal, surgeons "drill across the two bones and place heavy non-absorbable suture construct with metallic buttons at either end — the “tightrope” — to hold the bones close together."
The end result is long-term protection and stability.
The rest of the college football world is collectively holding its breath that Tagovailoa will be available for the sport's game of the year in Tuscaloosa three weeks from now, a matchup with sizable Playoff and SEC title implications.
Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts underwent a similar procedure last season after suffering a high ankle sprain against Tennessee. He was limited for a week, then returned to near full strength thereafter and ultimately led the Crimson Tide to a comeback win over Georgia in the SEC final on his surgically-repaired ankle.
Ironically, former Crimson Tide left tackle Cam Robinson had a tight-rope operation on his ankle after the Tennessee game in 2014 and was able to suit up and start two weeks later when the Crimson Tide played LSU.
Alabama is confident Tagovailoa's return will take a near identical path.
“He said, ‘I’ll be back for LSU,’” Crimson Tide linebacker Terrell Lewis said after the game. “I know how Tua is. It’s something he’s been through before, so I don’t doubt the fact that he’s a competitor. He’s going to get right back, and he’ll be fine.”
Tagovailoa suffered an ankle sprain in the SEC Championship Game last season and had a four-week break prior to the Crimson Tide's next game, the pivotal Playoff semifinal vs. Oklahoma. That was a 29-day break between starts for Tagovailoa, who has 20 days prior to the LSU game.

Ok no but I'm not the only who thinks without Tua we don't have a chance! That last article makes me feel better but did I read it right" jalen was back at it a week later "? To say I cave in life situations is silly when talking about football injuries

How do y’all Bama fans feel about this?
Watching the graphics that have been released this seems like a pretty severe treatment for something that usually heals in like 4-6 weeks by itself.
Not to mention I’m guessing Tua will be drowning in pain meds if he plays like that. I feel for him, and that’s not sarcasm at all.
From everything I've read about this procedure, it results in a stronger ankle (like forever stronger because there is a chord holding the bones together instead of a tendon). He already had it done to the other one. If he really has fragile ankles, he is probably better off in the long run to go ahead and get it done.

Right, I guess I’m not asking about the procedure itself, more the fact that they are going to play him so soon after having holes drilled in his leg and a wire put through them. They may say the recovery time is 3 weeks, but watching those graphics there is no way he won’t be in extreme pain even after 3 weeks.
The recovery is more about the open wound than the ankle. If they keep it clean, there is no reason it shouldn't be as good as new in short order.

Jalen didn't play for 4 weeks. 2 weeks post surgery was the LSU game. He looked like a gimpy grandmother in warmups.

fragile ankles
Fragile? Looking at the video for the umpteenth time, the entire weight of the tackler fell on and twisted his foot/ankle into the turf. I think fragile is an inaccurate description of his ankles. I don't think there are too many mortals that wouldn't have been injured from that tackle.

Am I the only one that's super optimistic that Tua will be close to 100% for the LSU game?
I highly doubt he'd have been smoking cigars and milling around the locker room if it's a significant as some are saying it is.
Am I drinking too much of the koolaid?

he was smoking cuz they had just beaten UT a bitter and hated rival. I think he would have done that regardless of what he would know about his medical options down the road. I think they knew that night he was going to have the procedure done.

Even Nick is being more realistic in his comment today. He said "Tua will be able to do active REHAB after 10 day period, and we will go from there. These things can be unpredictable "
Edit, he started by saying hopefully.

He was smoking cigars BEFORE someone cut his ankle open, drilled a hole in his bones, inserted a tensioning device, and then sewed him back up. What said ankle will feel like in 19 days is anyone's guess.

Saban said there’s no timetable for Tua’s return but hopes he’ll be doing active rehab in 10 days
Feel like there's a little gamesmanship.
Also something to note. There were 28 days between his surgery last year and OU. This time it's 20 days.
But Tua was traveling A LOT for awards shows...Atlanta, NY.
This time he can be at home and 100% focus on rehab.
From the doctor that performs the surgery, you're running Day 8 and cutting soon after.

Saban comments sounded like Tua will not be available for the LSU.
We better hope one of OU, Ohio St or Clemson loses or one loss Bama isn't getting in the playoffs

Another thing to consider is that it isn't his plant leg this time. Hopefully that makes things a little easier.

Don’t waste your time on that Tiger guy. It’s obvious he is wanting to down the coaches for playing Tua and wants us to as well. I’m sure it’s because he is “so very concerned about Tua’s health”.

I'm not saying it's going to be anything otherwise but I wouldn't put any stock in what Saban says. He's going to be vague as possible in a situation like this.
Let's hope that things progress well for Tua because I have little faith that we will beat LSU with Mac Jones.

Not sure how you got that out of it.
Probably a little gamesmanship. Being vague is to his advantage now.

Bama scored 7 points on offense against Tennessee in 2 and a half quarters without Tua.
So the answer is probably no.
