He is awfully small. But, I think he's quicker than he gets credit for, and handles the ball better than our other guards (not saying a ton there). Honestly, I'd only worry about his defense against larger guards.

Yep - my main concern with him would be defense.

I think he has shown to be a suitable ball handler, floor general and shooting threat (when given space). I'm not sure he can guard big, athletic guards out front, but I think he earned the right to put it to the test for sure.

Key is going to have to improve immensely by next year and I'm not sure he can. He's a turnover machine because he's slow and lazy with the ball...terrible handle that will be exploited by good teams...basically, he has poor agility.

I think this is off the mark, and it's also based mostly on the last three games. Key's handle is great for a 6-8 guy. We relied on Key a ton to score and handle the ball this year because no one else could. By the end of the year teams knew this and adjusted. Surround him with the talent he had at Oak Hill, and he'll flourish.

He's a great passer and a smart player especially when you get him the ball at around the free throw line. At Oak Hill he was very efficient, but this year we asked him to play outside of his game.

Agree - we put a TON on his shoulders, and for the most part he handled it extremely well.

One of the big things for next year has to be telling Ingram to take more open looks.

This is the problem I had with multiple players on the team. So many times we would pass up on an open 3 early in the shot clock, then end up with a forced look late in the shot clock.

I don't know if this is because that's what they are being coached to do (I don't think so) or if we just didn't have anybody willing to pull the trigger in big moments.

That all should change next year with some alpha dogs on the court.

Why do you hate Braxton Key?

I feel like you've spent the past two-three months calling him a bum and telling us how much he sucks.

He's a true freshman that started almost every game this year and led the team in scoring.

Nobody proclaimed him to be the next Kobe Bryant.

He met every reasonable expectation he should have had placed on him.

Of course he has room to improve, so does every single other college basketball player in the country.

My hope is that his game can look like Levi Randolph's did, but with more ability to attack the basket aggressively.

The fact that he was leaned on this much this early will be a blessing in disguise in the future imo.

Also, I'm starting to get the crazy idea that Schaffer might be the best true PG we have on the team right now.

It's not that crazy. I've been saying it all season. We don't have a true PG on scholarship. He knows what to do with the ball and how to attack zones. He has a great deep ball and makes very crisp passes. He also has the tightest handle on the team by far. Seems like he crosses a dude up every time he comes in. He also seems to be a solid defender and lives in the passing lanes. I posted these stats on twitter and while most of it has been during garbage time, it's still very impressive. Per 40 min stats: 22.9 PPG, 7.1 APG, 5.7 RPG, 4.3 SPG with just 1.4 TOPG (very impressive STAT here).

Would have loved to extend the season, but our guys were obviously out of gas last night. Time to look forward:

What we did well that we need to continue to do well:

- Defense

We continue to play elite defense under CAJ. I know last night was frustrating, but our guys have guarded their tails off this year. We finished the season (excluding NIT) ranked 10th in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom. I look for this to continue with the addition of Sexton, Petty, and Giddens as all three are great defenders.

- Rebounding

HUGE improvement from 15-16. The addition of Bola certainly helped, but I think all of our bigs were better this year. Kudos to the staff. I look for Giddens to be active on the boards, but it would not surprise me to see us add a grad transfer "clean up" guy in the mold of Bola.

- Effort

Again, aside from last night, we continue to see CAJ's teams play with great effort.

What we did not well and need to improve on to make the next step

- Scoring

Captain Obvious here, but getting buckets continues to be a struggle. There are multiple problems (finishing at the rim, post play, perimeter shooting, turnovers, general basketball IQ.) Sexton and Petty will help tremendously with their ability to get to the basket. This will create more opportunities both around the rim for post players and open shots for whoever can knock them down.

- Confidence

In my opinion, this is where Sexton will leave his biggest mark on the program. We need to get our swagger back.

Whoa there hossfly! I don't dislike Braxton Key. Hell, if he can clean up his handle and Avery can get him the ball where he needs it (about 15 ft and in), I think he'll be an exceptional player. Probably the 2 things that can be said in his defense are 1) he's a freshman and will naturally improve, and 2) he was asked to play outside of his normal game because of our personnel. I still question his agility, but because he was asked to handle the ball so much in the open court, a guy his size isn't generally going to shine in that situation.
I'm tough on him because I realize the potential he has IF he'll devote himself to the effort it's going to take to reach it...the devotion worries me.

I've always felt that if a guy knows how to play, he will be able to play. Regardless of size. He didn't just become small. I watched the kid light up teams in high school and almost every team had the same idea. Put a bigger player on him and he still lit it up. I hope he gets a chance to play more next year. If we truly are going to speed the game up now that we have some hosses coming in, Lawson could really shine. Open court and transition 3s are what he would really thrive at.

Oh god don't say anything bad about key!

People give dazon more shite and key actually deserves it. Ingram plays with more effort and plays better defense. Both are good but key is lazy way to often

Washington has fired their head coach. Michael Porter Jr is committed to them and his dad is an assistant there. I bet he'll de-committ. Think we have any chance at him? Maybe hire his dad as an assistant?

Edit: nvm. Mizzou is getting his dad. Probably will get both

I hope my fears are unfounded, but what you have alluded to is where my concern come from. It wasn't too long ago that a good-looking 6'8" kid from Tenn. came into the program and he looked like a "can't miss" player, too....name was Shannon Hale.

Ideally Key can develop like Alonzo Gee or Levi Randolf did throughout their college career. Both of those guys seemed to be more slashers who thrive around the basket and in the mid range but could hit the occasional 3. Crisp is right though that we shouldn't forget how promising Hale was his freshman year and how we all assumed he would be "the guy" sooner rather than later.

Obviously only time will tell but if Key can just give us the production he did this year next year and cut down on turnovers and laziness you'd have to like where our team would be at this time next year.

He got frustrated when they backed off of him and he couldn't drive. He didn't handle that well and didn't want to take the outside shot but he had a good year with a tough stretch late.

He was a freshman, gheesh.
