Time To Abandon The "Mush Rush"

I'm no football coach so im sort of talking out of my arse here, but hear me out
The "mush rush" seems like an old-school solution to a running QB. It was somewhat effective back when we had big monsters on the DL who could simply drive their man back into the QB.
These days we have speed rushers who are instantly neutralized in a "mush rush"
INSTEAD of a mush rush, why don't we have our guys gunning for sacks on every down, firing off the edges with reckless abandon, and we protect against the QB run by having Dallas Turner spy the QB?
This way it seems like the QB would be bothered on every snap, and unable to get by Dallas Turner.
Does this make sense to anyone else?

atleast in the Tenn game it would have helped ... could be a strategy to adopt when you are up against hot qb and nothing else is working anyway ..
its mind boggling we didnt adjust

If your building a cabinet a saw seems like the best tool in the world while cutting the wood. But when it gets time to screw it together the saw becomes a hindrance to your goals.
Golding is the guy that only has one tool in the bag and never goes looking for anymore. If you at first don’t succeed then don’t change and routinely get converted on with 3&10s.

Not trying to sound mean... but I laugh because this seems like a sound strategy but [as you stated] more experienced coaching minds haven't used it... probably for a reason.
Coach Saban once stated in an interview about Ms. Terry giving advice - 'She always wants us to blitz more'

Bama used to have great blitz packages, remember all the times a DB would blitz and blow the play up?
Ever since Golding became the Def coordinator those big explosive plays have gone away

We had Several DB blitzing in recent weeks.

quote:With everyone running out of shotgun, the corner blitz just isn't as effective anymore. Under center he'd arrive right when the QB finished his drop, but in shotgun the QB already has the ball and is looking to throw it into the space he knows is vacated.

Good point. We seem to have trouble finding that vacated space when we get blitzed though

I just don't expect anything to change with the defense, unfortunately.

I don't think Saban will change much but I agree the days of the mush rush are over. Currently the passing games are so well oiled that if you give a good QB more than 3 seconds it's a complete pass. Even good DB's can't defend it. So yes, QB's who can run are going to be a problem, but if you let them sit back there an scan the field you might as well not come out of the locker room.
It was different when high schools rarely passed but these kids coming from major programs have been in shotgun their entire life and it's a lot easier to find an accurate passer than it used to be. I'm not saying NFL good, just college good, think Jeff Garcia without the alcohol problem.
