Guards left out there that seem to fit with what we'd want out of a 10-12 min a game backup PG (stats vs Top 200)
- Jalen Rucker (Army) (91% FT, 21.2 Assist rate, 39% 3PT, 74% at the rim)
- Kyree Brown (New Hampshire) (75% FT, 31.7 Assist rate, 42% rim)
- Peyton Daniels (Jacksonville St) (75% FT, 30.7 Assist rate, 40% rim)
I'm not sure there's really anyone left that we'd use a scholarship on with the risk of not being able to get Sherrell at mid-year if that's a legit possiblity.
Trey Woodbury from Utah Valley would be too but he seems to be thought to be going to Ole Miss.

Re: the Slater tweet.
There are some guys who are gonna grad transfer that haven’t entered the portal yet. The deadline for grad transfers isnt until August 28th.

This is my line of thinking as well. While I don't like saving a scholarship for a HS kid that may reclassify and would like another ball-handler for next year, he is pretty safely a top 15 guy in his class, and I don't think he's draft eligible this year. Us getting an insurance-level PG isn't worth losing out on 1.5 years of Sherrell. You could even argue that Sherrell would be a more impactful option for us this year considering what is left.

Perez from WVU (previously Manhattan as he was denied a waiver last year and never played a second for WVU) just entered the portal.
He's a combo guard but his assist rates at Manhattan and previously Gardner Webb were very good. No clue if he ran the point at either place.
At this point I feel confident that Oats has a very good feel for the portal, who fits and who he has a good chance at corralling. If we go after another guy it'll be worth it, if not none of them are good fits I'd guess.

Damn. That's fricking cold.

I dont think Sherrell is going to reclassify in December. We’re still in good shape to get him in the ‘24 class.

I'm reading on al.com that Wague rounds out our 13 scholarships, but I'm reading on this board that we have one more.
Here's the al.com link: Al.com
The part about this being our final scholarship is in the last paragraph.
Can anyone clarify? Thanks ahead of time.

He would be similar to Estrada and could run some point. Only thing is that his shooting is suspect and his turnover rate is not ideal. He often plays to contact and last 3 seasons he's struggled from 3pt range. His shooting might improve off ball but who knows. I might would wait a little bit to see if a grad transfer became available.

I would love to see the Stevenson and Sherrell duo again. Last year on the NBPA Top 100, Stevenson and Sherrell played nicely together on the same team at each other's quirks.

After reflecting on Slater's tweet, the "Queens" reference is probably referring to somewhere else, similar to Trilly's "Manhattan" reference.
If anyone wants to do the research, here's a list of towns that go by the Queen City nickname, including our very own Tuscaloosa. LINK

I'm wondering if Oats plans to run more "point forward" this year since we will be thin at true point guard. We ran that a lot with Herb. Also Miller would bring the ball up the floor last year.

He was referring to Queens NY for sure.

I think we will see Nelson run it a good bit.

We're definitely going to see some point forward action out of Nelson and that's why I think he's going to thrive in this system. I don't think at NDSU there was too much of rebound and get going.

ithiel horton from ucf and noah williams from washington would be two other decent options for that role who are still available as far as i know. both combo guards.

I like Horton.
Think he could develop into a backup PG!
