Alabama basketball in discussions with Pelicans assistant Ryan Pannone | Source

Alabama basketball is in discussions with NBA assistant Ryan Pannone for an assistant coach opening, a source told The Tuscaloosa News.

Pannone has been an assistant for the New Orleans Pelicans since July 2022. Before then, he was the head coach of the Erie Bayhawks/Birmingham Squadron, the NBA G League affiliate of the Pelicans, from 2019-2022.

Pannone would fill one of three vacancies on the Crimson Tide coaching staff this offseason created by the departure of Charlie Henry (Georgia Southern), Bryan Hodgson (Arkansas State) and Antoine Pettway (Kennesaw State) to head coaching jobs.

Nicholls coach Austin Claunch is expected to fill one of the spots, though that hire has not been made official yet.

Before Pannone joined the NBA G League, he was an assistant coach for Hapoel Jerusalem basketball club from 2018-19, a role he also filled from 2016-17. Between those stops, he worked as the coach of BC Prievidza in Prievidza, Slovakia, among other stops.

Pannone, a native of Clearwater, Florida native, got his bachelor's degree from South Florida.

Alabama is fresh off a season in which it reached the NCAA Tournament for the third time in coach Nate Oats' four seasons. The Crimson Tide earned a No. 1 seed for the first time in program history, winning the SEC regular-season title and SEC Tournament title along the way.

Alabama lost in the Sweet 16 to San Diego State, who went on to play in the national championship game.

Seems like maybe this was part of the trip to Nola that Nate and Greg took?

Might be the silver lining of Herb and Kira getting bounced before the playoffs.

If what Whittle hinted at today was correct, the third assistant may be coming from the NBA as well. Prior rumblings of Roy Rogers could be true, but I'm not sure what they are waiting for on that one if so.

Also, unless this other NBA guy has prior NCAA coaching experience, we are going to be mighty thin on collegiate level experience from our assistants. Worries me more on recruiting violations than anything else really.

Theyre both elite basketball coaches that’s all I know. Both would be homerun hires.

Now we’ve just gotta hire an elite recruiter for this third spot.

We’re bringing in A lot of length with this recruiting class

Kris Parker 6’8 G
Jaykwon Walton 6’7 G/F
Davis Cosby Jr 6’5 G
Mouhammed Dioubete 6’7 F
Sam Walters 6’9 F

I assume we’ll add another Forward that’s 6’8 or over too out of the portal.

Did people not watch the first 25-27 games of the year?

No. The FOGs did not watch until end of February.

hmmm. Probably 2nd/3rd most important. But he's our top returning scorer and best 3 point shooter. If he wasn't undersized, he might be gone. But anyone shite talking Mighty Mouse is a damn fool.

And you probably won't see as many tournament upsets as you saw over the last couple years.

Sears was great last year. His shot just went cold at the worst possible time. He hustled, played hard, and played good defense, especially the 2nd half of the season. I love the dude.

No. They wanted to see Rebirth at the Maple Leaf.

I like the rule change. Kids should be able to take what visits they want without having to spend a bunch of money in hotels. And having done some traveling for with recently, I'm shocked by how much hotels cost nowadays. Basic rooms at middle of nowhere Hampton Inns cost about $200/night. Not rooms in the beach. But middle of absolute nowhere. Unless it's crack/meth city, nothing is less than $150.

Lol. Dude doesn't get the joke. I roll a lot of jays. I'll probably roll 4-5 jays for the Billy Strings concert tomorrow. Though I'll probably need to use a pen indoors.

BYU already did that with their football team.

Hogs have unlimited funds from Walmart, Tyson Chicken, and JB Hunt trucking, and until the NCAA does anything about the supposedly illegal up front payments to sign, you can’t blame Musselman for spending whatever he needs to sign top players.

So where are these "unlimited funds" in football? You guys are actually crying over getting beat by Arkansas in NIL? Is this what it's come to?

Again...Walmart and Tyson couldn't care less about Tylor Perry.

Arkansas has minutes up for grabs. That's the key. We have Sears and Q most likely coming back. That's the real story.
