quote:There are also people in this conversation that saw the entire game. Philon scored 47 in a 32 minute game. RJ clamped him so well that 8 time State champion coach Jack Doss only has RJ guard him for a couple minutes, I guess? A couple highlights where RJ stopped him isn’t putting clamps on a kid that scored 47.
You know there's actual footage where RJ Johnson guarded Labaron Philon?
quote:I never claimed he out performed everybody that he has gone against. That’s stupid. For example, plenty of players have out performed Brandon Miller individually in particular games this year. That doesn’t mean those players are in the same league as a soon to be lottery pick just because they had a good game against him or he had an average night.
By the way Spence Sims was BETTER than him since you claimed he out performed everybody he's gone against!
quote:That’s my opinion as a former college basketball player after watching both in person for multiple games and on film plenty. Time will tell which of us is correct.
But hey Philon is in another league then RJ.
quote:My opinion of both players was posted in this thread long before anyone thought AU had the advantage in getting Philon.
Auburn gets a borderline to 40 player in Philon and thinks he is the best player of all time. I know it's big news for them so I'll let them enjoy it.

4-star F Tyler Betsey has some official visits in mind
Tyler Betsey is the No. 13 player in the 2024 On3 150. The 6-foot-8 forward was one of the most prolific shooters on Nike’s EYBL Circuit this summer, shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc.
“My handle is becoming a weapon,” Betsey told On3. “I’ve got a bigger role on my high school team than I had in AAU, but I’ve got a lot more moves in my bag. I’m getting downhill and getting to the free-throw line a lot this season. I watch a lot of Paul George, he is 6-foot-10, and he really has a handle. He knows how to use it, get to his spots, and get buckets.”
“I haven’t set up any officials yet. I’m talking with LSU, Alabama, Indiana, and Duke about dates.”
Alabama: “To see how Brandon Miller came in and was one of the best players in the SEC. He and I are built the same, we can both shoot, and he’s not jumping out of the gym or doing anything crazy, just getting to his spots and making shots. They run a lot of sets for him, so that shows me Nate Oats knows what he is doing with his talent.”

I love how many of us started to be concerned this past weekend about basketball recruiting when Philon committed to Auburn (myself included), but then a random top 15 name comes out that wants to take an OV to us.
Basketball recruiting is even more fluid than football and there are plenty of guys we are in on that haven't been brought up before. I feel like we knew little about Bradley, Clowney, and Griffen being really interested in Bama until later in the recruiting season as well. Oats will get the right guys, we just need to be patient. The transfer portal makes that even more true these days.

6'8 and shoots over 40% from three, sounds perfect for us.

I do think Philon is a very good player by the way and would much rather have him than RJ Johnson.
RJ Johnson would be perfect for what we need next year at PG though, a 3rd ball handler behind Bradley and Sears. He can shoot, is a good passer, strong finisher, good size for a PG at 6'3 190. I think he is an underrated prospect.

Fans will be extremely surprised at just how good RJ Johnson is.
Pending if everything is cleared up for him.

Imagine having
6'7 SG Dink Pate
6'8 SF Tyler Betsey
6'9 PF Donnie Freeman
That's a lot of size that can shoot.

Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College forward Donnie Freeman utilized an official visit to Tuscaloosa late last month when the Crimson Tide hosted Mississippi State. It’s one of three official visits the No. 32 prospect in the 2024 class has used thus far, the other two being Texas and Iowa.
“It was good,” Freeman told BamaOnLine. “The thing that separated the Alabama visit from any other visit I went on was the timing. When I went to Texas, it was kind of football season, and I didn’t really get to see what the grind was like. But when I went down to Alabama it was like in the middle of the season. I got to see the game-day prep, got to see everything during basketball season. That was really good. I really liked Alabama. And I really like what Alabama can do for me. And, of course, what I can do for them as well.”
Since taking in UA’s win last month, Freeman has made sure to tune in when the Crimson Tide is playing.
“I watched them a little bit before, but after I went there I haven’t missed a game,” he said. “When you look at their roster it’s a lot of players built like me, with the same skillset as me. I love how they use Brandon (Miller) and how they use Noah (Clowney) as well. I like how they utilize their forwards.”
Alabama has kept in close contact with Freeman. He was messaging with UA head coach Nate Oats on Wednesday morning even.
“Coach (Bryan) Hodgson is my main recruiter. He’s fun to talk to. He’s all about business,” Freeman said. “What I like about Coach Oats, is he’s a real coach. He isn’t going to sugarcoat anything. He’ll tell you how it is. He’ll do whatever he can to get you to the next level. But he also cares about his players at the same time. That’s what you want from a head coach. That’s a good mix.”
Freeman isn’t in a rush to make a decision, but he wouldn’t mind getting it out of the way.
“Sooner rather than later, hopefully,” he said of his timeline.
The 6-foot-8, 190-pounder says no one school is on top at this point.
“Everybody is pretty neck and neck,” he said.
No additional visits are scheduled at this point in time.

Thanks for the help! Also, that sounds pretty darn positive for our end. Hopefully we can seal the deal in the next few months.

Grissom lost to Sparkman last night, from what I've read RJ scored 9 points. A poster on another site mentioned he had a few turnovers as well.
I know his stock started heating up over the Summer, so his offer list isn't reflective of the interest he was actually starting to get, but this one is still a head-scratcher to me.
The good news is you can bring him along slowly next year with the amount of backcourt depth we have. The bad news is, well, he can always transfer instead of potentially having to wait his turn.

Nice. Sherrell is basically a clone of Clowney.

Maybe it has to do with him missing two months? He is a good player that regularly scored 30 in games earlier this season.
He got offered by Georgia and LSU as well its not like we are his only good offer.

Sherrell is already 6’11 215 as a Jr, I assume he would play center for us.
Would be a great get.

Grissom changed over the time RJ was out honestly.
