I don't think they are recruiting Gurley to play the 5. He could play about any position 2-5 though, he is versatile. He is no doubt a lot further along in his development than Wilson or KAH. Like I said earlier, I think Gurley is what they hope KAH can eventually turn into as far as his skillset, being 6'8 but can pass dribble and shoot well.

He'll be a big for us. Sometimes that could mean he's at the 4, sometimes at the 5 (maybe very sporadically with two other "bigs" in a mega-sized lineup). I don't think Oats worries much about whether a guy is a "true 5."

Oats love big guys who can play guard, Jeremy Harris was his PG at buffalo and was 6'7, herb played point last year and was 6'8. I think what they like about Gurley is that he is 6'8 and has a similar skillset to a guard. If we were recruiting him to be a big I doubt we have much interest now that we got Bediako, in that case Gurley was probably a backup plan.

The potential for our bigs this coming year is sky high but it's also the lowest floor out of all our positions. If we find a good contributor or two we're a top 5 team, if not, I could see another Sweet 16 kinda bounce.
We have so many question marks, adding Gurley would bring some consistency to the group but I have no idea who else I would want to leave outside of Rojas.

Is there a link to the announcement?

Also KAH and Langston Wilson are 6’8-6'9 and Oats didnt recruit them to play the 5. Just because Gurley is 6’8 doesn't mean we are recruiting him to play the 5, he is skilled enough to play about any position 3-5.

I doubt it. I’m sure it’ll just be an edit that he or someone that makes them will post on IG / Twitter

I don't know what we have done to receive such favor from the basketball gods, but I appreciate it. #doitforfluff

I think the disconnect here is when I talk about positions I'm mainly talking about defense.
Herb may have started the game offensively as a point guard, but he didn't start the game defending other point guards. He started the game defending other bigs.
Gurley could play offense like a guard, but defensively I think he'll spend most of his time as a 4 or a 5.
Offensively I think Oats would like us to be relatively position-less: just a bunch of guys who can run, shoot, pass, dribble, etc.
On defense (even though we switch a lot), there has to be some guys that can defend other bigs, defend the paint, etc. Gurley would be one of those guys.

Agree to disagree for reasons I stated above. Tchikou is coming off a bad injury, KAH didn't play at all, Wilson is raw, Bediako is a true freshmen.
We have no experience, and Gurley is clearly currently a better player than some (all?) of those guys.
If we have too much big-man depth to bring in Gurley, why would we bring him in to be a guard? Look at the depth there:
JD
JQ
Primo
Ellis
Shack
Burnett?
Miles
Holt
Clearly that's where we're really stacked.

And it was Shams that announced it, so Alabama basketball is a pretty big deal.
